Overview

The Takamaz XWG-3 is a dual-spindle, dual-slide CNC precision lathe with gang-type tooling, purpose-built for ultra-high-volume production of small turned parts up to 30 mm in diameter. This machine represents Takamaz's answer to the growing demand for complete part machining in a single compact footprint — two spindles, two gang tool slides, and integrated automation in a machine that occupies barely 2.75 square meters of floor space.

Both spindles deliver up to 8,000 RPM (6,000 RPM with hydraulic chuck option), powered by 5.5/3.7 kW motors that provide more than enough muscle for aggressive turning of small parts in aluminum, brass, steel, and engineering plastics. The gang-type tooling configuration eliminates turret indexing time entirely, contributing to the exceptionally short cycle times that make the XWG-3 competitive with Swiss-type lathes on parts that don't require guide bushing support.

The dual-spindle architecture enables simultaneous machining of two parts or sequential first-op/second-op processing with automatic part transfer between spindles. Each slide provides 160 mm of X-travel and 230 mm of Z-travel, giving operators sufficient room for typical small-part turning sequences including OD turning, facing, grooving, and cutoff. Rapid traverse rates of 16 m/min on X and 20 m/min on Z keep non-cutting time minimal.

Automation is built into the machine's DNA. The MG30 and MG30H loader options handle workpieces up to 30 mm diameter and 0.3 kg, maintaining continuous production flow. The Mitsubishi M830VW control manages both spindles and slides seamlessly, and the single-frame construction means only one set of auxiliary equipment (hydraulics, coolant, chip conveyor) is needed — a significant advantage over running two separate machines.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual-spindle, dual-slide architecture enables complete both-end machining or parallel processing in one machine
  • 8,000 RPM spindle speed maximizes surface speed on small-diameter parts for superior finish quality
  • Gang-type tooling eliminates turret indexing time for the fastest possible cycle times on simple parts
  • Compact 1.34 x 2.13 meter footprint is remarkably small for a twin-spindle machine
  • Single-frame construction with shared auxiliaries reduces total cost versus running two separate machines
  • Mitsubishi M830VW control provides advanced dual-channel programming for synchronized spindle operations

Limitations

  • 30 mm maximum workpiece diameter severely limits the machine to very small parts only
  • Gang-type tooling offers fewer tool positions than turret-based alternatives
  • No live tooling capability means secondary milling or cross-drilling operations require a separate machine
  • Limited availability and service support outside Japan and select Asian markets

Best For

Ultra-high-volume production of small turned parts under 30 mm diameter in automotive and electronics industries Complete both-end machining of small fittings, pins, connectors, and precision bushings Shops seeking to replace two single-spindle gang lathes with one dual-spindle machine Production of watch components, medical device parts, and miniature precision components Facilities needing maximum output per square meter of floor space for small part production

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Takamaz XWG-3 cost?

New Takamaz XWG-3 machines typically price between $150,000 and $220,000 depending on loader configuration and options. The dual-spindle design effectively replaces two machines, making the cost-per-spindle competitive with single-spindle alternatives.

02 How does the XWG-3 compare to a Swiss-type lathe?

The XWG-3 uses fixed-headstock gang tooling rather than a guide bushing, so it is best for shorter parts that don't need the length-to-diameter support a Swiss provides. For parts under 3:1 L/D ratio, the XWG-3 often delivers faster cycle times and lower cost per part.

03 Can the XWG-3 run unattended?

Yes, with the MG30 or MG30H loader, the XWG-3 runs fully automated production. The dual-spindle architecture with automatic part transfer enables complete parts without operator intervention.

04 What is the difference between the MG30 and MG30H loaders?

Both handle workpieces up to 30 mm diameter and 0.3 kg per side. The MG30H is the higher-specification loader option offering enhanced workpiece handling capabilities for more demanding production scenarios.
