Overview
The Hyundai-WIA LV 800RM is a vertical turning center for high-productivity machining of disc-shaped and flanged parts. Vertical lathes use gravity to seat workpieces on a horizontal table, eliminating clamping distortion on heavy parts and simplifying loading. The LV 800RM handles workpieces up to 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter with approximately 600 mm (23.6 in) turning height.
The table spindle is powered by a 37 kW (50 HP) motor with max table speed of 800 RPM. The ram-type cross slide carries a 12-station turret for OD/ID turning, facing, boring, grooving, and threading. The RM designation indicates the ram-type configuration providing excellent rigidity for boring operations. Live tooling is available.
Box way construction on both axes handles significant cutting forces from roughing large castings. The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control interfaces with gantry loaders and robotic loading systems for automated production.
New LV 800RM machines price $200,000-$300,000. Competes with Doosan VT-900/1100 series, Mazak VTC-800, and Emag VL series. The combination of heavy-duty construction and competitive Korean pricing suits automotive tier suppliers and production shops.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Vertical spindle uses gravity to seat workpieces, reducing clamping distortion on heavy parts
- 37 kW motor delivers high torque for aggressive roughing on cast iron and steel
- Ram-type turret provides excellent rigidity for deep boring operations
- Box ways handle heavy cutting forces and vibration from large castings
- Vertical configuration enables fast gantry or robotic automated loading
- Competitive Korean pricing vs equivalent Japanese and European VTLs
Limitations
- Specialized for disc-shaped parts -- shops without regular VTL work will underutilize it
- 800 RPM max table speed limits surface speed on smaller workpieces
- 8,000 kg weight requires substantial floor preparation
- VTL-specific service expertise less established than horizontal turning support
- Chip management requires careful coolant system design on vertical machines
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
$200,000-$300,000 new. Base ~$200,000-$225,000. With live tooling and automation $275,000-$300,000+.
02
VTLs excel at disc-shaped parts: gravity assists workholding, heavy parts don't create overhang issues, loading is easier. For round flat parts, VTLs are significantly more productive.
03
Yes with optional live tooling for drilling, tapping, and milling bolt holes, keyways, and flats without second setup.
04
Gantry loaders and 6-axis robotic loading. Can integrate into multi-machine production cells with conveyors.
05
Emag uses inverted spindle design optimized for short-cycle automotive mass production. LV 800RM offers more flexibility for varied part sizes. Emag is typically more expensive and more specialized.
