Overview
The Haas VF-6/40TR is a 5-axis machining center built on the large-frame VF-6 platform with an integrated dual-axis trunnion table. It brings simultaneous 5-axis capability to the 1,626 mm (64 in) X-travel envelope, giving shops the ability to machine complex multi-axis features on large parts without repositioning. The TR designation means the trunnion is factory-integrated into the machine geometry and calibrated at the factory.
The base VF-6 platform provides 1,626 x 813 x 762 mm (64 x 32 x 30 in) of travel, which is far more than any Haas UMC model offers. The 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive spindle runs at 8,100 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM. The CT40/BT40/HSK-A63 taper accepts standard 40-taper tooling.
The trunnion adds a tilting A-axis with +120 to -35 degrees of rotation and a full 360-degree C-axis. The trunnion table diameter is approximately 311 mm (12.25 in) with a 91 kg (200 lb) load capacity on the platter, matching the VF-3TR specifications. The 1,829 x 660 mm (72 x 26 in) main table with 2,041 kg (4,500 lb) capacity gives room to fixture parts alongside the trunnion or use the full table for 3-axis work.
The 30+1 SMTC posts 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip times. Rapid traverse runs at 15.2 m/min (600 ipm). At approximately 9,072 kg (20,000 lb), the VF-6/40TR provides solid rigidity across the large work envelope. For shops that need 5-axis access on parts up to 64 inches long but with smaller 5-axis features, the VF-6/40TR delivers that combination without requiring a purpose-built large 5-axis machine costing $400K or more. Specs derived from Haas Automation published data for the VF-6 and TR platform.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,626 mm (64 in) X-travel with integrated trunnion brings 5-axis capability to large parts that no UMC model can reach
- Factory-integrated trunnion eliminates the alignment headaches of bolting an aftermarket rotary onto a VF-6
- Full 72 x 26-inch table with 4,500 lb capacity still available for 3-axis work alongside the trunnion
- Same proven 30 HP spindle and NGC control as the entire VF line with no new learning curve
- Significantly lower cost than purpose-built large 5-axis machines from DMG Mori, Hermle, or Matsuura
- 91 kg (200 lb) trunnion capacity is double the VF-2TR, handling medium-sized 5-axis workpieces
Limitations
- 91 kg (200 lb) trunnion load limits 5-axis work to medium-sized parts despite the large machine envelope
- 311 mm (12.25 in) trunnion platter is small relative to the machine size, restricting 5-axis part dimensions
- 8,100 RPM spindle limits high-speed finishing in aluminum; no SS variant available for the VF-6TR
- Trunnion accuracy and rigidity do not match purpose-built 5-axis platforms for production 5-axis work

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $185,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and common options, expect $210,000-$240,000. That is roughly half the price of a dedicated large 5-axis machine.
02
The UMC-1250 is a purpose-built 5-axis machine with a larger trunnion, higher rigidity, and better accuracy for 5-axis production work. The VF-6/40TR offers more X-travel (64 vs 50 in) and the versatility of a full VMC table for 3-axis work. Choose the UMC-1250 for dedicated 5-axis; the VF-6/40TR for versatility.
03
Yes. The integrated A and C axes support full simultaneous 5-axis contouring through the NGC control with RTCP compensation. The machine accepts standard 5-axis G-code from CAM systems like Mastercam, Fusion 360, and NX.
04
Maximum weight on the platter is 91 kg (200 lb). The trunnion platter is 311 mm (12.25 in) in diameter. Parts must fit within these constraints when fixtured, though the 72-inch main table can hold additional workpieces for 3-axis operations.
