Overview

The DMG Mori DMU 160 P FD duoBLOCK is the flagship mill-turn machine in the duoBLOCK lineup, combining the largest work envelope of 1,600 x 1,600 x 1,100 mm (63 x 63 x 43.3 in) with a DirectDrive rotary table capable of turning at up to 400 RPM. With 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) table load capacity, this is the most capable rotary-table 5-axis mill-turn platform DMG Mori offers.

The FD designation adds turning operations to the already massive DMU 160 P duoBLOCK platform. The DirectDrive C-axis table provides sufficient torque for facing, boring, and cylindrical turning operations on workpieces up to 1,600 mm (63 in) in diameter and 1,775 mm (69.9 in) in height. This eliminates the need to transfer large, heavy workpieces between a 5-axis machining center and a vertical turning lathe — a significant productivity and accuracy benefit.

Spindle options follow the duoBLOCK standard. The powerMASTER 1000 motor spindle delivers 77 kW (103 hp) and 1,000 Nm (738 ft-lb) through HSK-A100. The 5X torqueMASTER gear spindle pushes 1,300 Nm (1,328 ft-lb) at 52 kW (70 hp) for aggressive roughing in superalloys. The FD table speed reaches 400 RPM — slightly lower than smaller duoBLOCK FD models due to the larger table mass.

The duoBLOCK construction at this scale provides exceptional mass and damping: thermosymmetric castings with three guide ways on the Y-axis, water-cooled feed drives on all linear axes, and the Spindle Growth Sensor for thermal compensation. The tool magazine holds up to 453 pockets with 5.6-second chip-to-chip changes.

Control options include SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE and HEIDENHAIN TNC7 with CELOS X. SINUMERIK ONE is preferred for mill-turn due to integrated turning cycles. DMG Mori quotes 96% uptime. For shops machining large aerospace engine casings, turbine discs, impellers, and heavy structural components requiring both 5-axis milling and turning, the DMU 160 P FD represents the pinnacle of rotary-table mill-turn capability. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,500 kg table load with FD mill-turn makes this the most capable rotary-table 5-axis mill-turn platform available
  • 1,600 x 1,600 x 1,100 mm travel cube accommodates the largest aerospace structures, turbine casings, and mold bases
  • DirectDrive table at 400 RPM enables turning on the largest workpieces in the duoBLOCK FD range
  • PowerMASTER and torqueMASTER spindles deliver the power spectrum from high-speed finishing to heavy superalloy roughing
  • 453-tool magazine with 5.6-second changes supports complex multi-operation mill-turn parts
  • DuoBLOCK construction at this scale provides exceptional mass and damping for combined milling and turning accuracy

Limitations

  • Price above $1.2M requires very high utilization or high-value workpieces to achieve acceptable payback
  • FD turning speed limited to 400 RPM due to table mass — dedicated VTLs are faster for pure turning
  • HSK-A100 tooling across milling and turning holders for a 453-tool magazine is a major tooling investment
  • Substantial floor space and foundation engineering costs ($50,000-$120,000+) add to total installation cost
  • Combined mill-turn programming demands operators proficient in both 5-axis milling and turning

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a DMG Mori DMU 160 P FD duoBLOCK cost?

New DMU 160 P FD duoBLOCK machines typically price between $1,200,000 and $1,800,000. Base powerMASTER configuration starts near $1.2M. Full configuration with torqueMASTER, 453-tool magazine, and automation approaches $1.8M.

02 How does this differ from the existing DMU 160 P FD?

The DMU 160 P FD duoBLOCK and DMU 160 P FD are the same machine platform. Both use the duoBLOCK construction with FD mill-turn capability, identical travel, and the same spindle options. The naming convention reflects different catalog designations for the same configuration.

03 Is 400 RPM turning speed limiting?

For parts in the 500-1,600 mm diameter range that this machine targets, 400 RPM provides adequate surface speeds. At 400 RPM on a 500 mm diameter, surface speed reaches 628 m/min. The limitation is primarily for small-diameter turning features where higher RPM would be beneficial.

04 What is the workpiece height difference between standard and FD?

The standard DMU 160 P duoBLOCK accommodates workpieces up to 1,675 mm (65.9 in) tall. The FD variant allows slightly taller workpieces at 1,775 mm (69.9 in) due to the different table configuration. Both maintain the same 4,500 kg load capacity.
