Overview
The Star SR-32J and SR-32JN are Star Micronics' standard-range Swiss-type CNC automatic lathes for the critical 32mm bar capacity class, with the SR-32J configured for guide bushing operation and the SR-32JN designed for non-guide bushing (NGB) operation. Together they provide comprehensive coverage of the 32mm Swiss market, enabling shops to choose the optimal configuration based on part geometry, tolerance requirements, and material utilization priorities.
The SR-32J/JN features a main spindle reaching 8,000 RPM and a back spindle at 8,000 RPM, with up to 10 axes including Y1 and Y2 capability for off-center machining on both front and back spindles. This dual Y-axis capability is particularly valuable at the 32mm bar size where parts tend to be more complex, with multiple milled features, flats, hexagons, and angular holes on both ends. Up to 30 tool positions including extensive live tooling provide the tooling density needed for even the most feature-rich 32mm Swiss parts.
Star's hydraulic-free design is especially valuable on the larger SR-32J/JN where hydraulic systems would generate more heat and require more maintenance. The all-electric design keeps thermal distortion to a minimum and eliminates the maintenance burden of hydraulic oil, filters, and pumps. Star's Motion Control System coordinates the multi-axis operations efficiently, and the Fanuc 31i-B5 control handles the complex synchronized programs with proven reliability.
The SR-32JN non-guide bushing variant is particularly noteworthy. At the 32mm bar size, guide bushing operation produces longer bar remnants that represent significant material waste, especially with expensive aerospace alloys and medical-grade materials. The NGB configuration eliminates this waste while still delivering excellent precision for parts with lower length-to-diameter ratios. Many shops run both the SR-32J and SR-32JN to optimize for different part families.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Star SR-32J ranges from approximately $250,000 for a standard configuration to $420,000 for a fully equipped 10-axis model with maximum tooling. The SR-32JN is priced similarly. Used SR-32J machines from 2012-2020 sell for $80,000-$200,000 depending on configuration and condition.
02
The SR-32J uses a guide bushing for maximum precision and longer machining lengths (up to 320mm). The SR-32JN operates without a guide bushing, which reduces bar remnant waste and is preferred for shorter parts. The SR-32JN's machining length is limited to approximately 100mm. Choose based on your part length and material cost considerations.
03
Both are premium 32mm Swiss lathes. The SR-32J offers hydraulic-free design, MCS, and up to 30 tools. The Citizen L32 offers LFV chip-breaking and up to 44 tools on the L32 XII with B-axis. The Star is preferred for shops prioritizing low maintenance and environmental impact, while the Citizen L32 XII is preferred for maximum tooling density and angular features.
04
At 32mm bar diameter, each bar remnant from guide bushing operation wastes a significant amount of material. For expensive aerospace alloys at $50-$200 per pound, this waste adds up quickly. NGB eliminates the guide bushing-length remnant, saving 3-6 inches of material per bar. For short parts with length-to-diameter ratios under 2.5:1, NGB is often the better economic choice.
05
With 10 axes, dual Y-axis, 30 tool positions, and extensive live tooling, the SR-32J can produce extremely complex parts including those with hexagons, flats, cross-holes at multiple angles, threading on both ends, and complex milled profiles. Parts that previously required 3-4 operations can often be completed in a single cycle.
