Overview
The Mazak UN-600/5X is a mid-size 5-axis vertical machining center with a trunnion-type rotary table, stepping up from the compact UD-400/5X to handle larger workpieces. The UN series targets production environments where full simultaneous 5-axis capability is needed on medium-sized aerospace components, energy parts, and precision industrial components.
Axis travels measure 700 x 550 x 500 mm (27.6 x 21.7 x 19.7 in) in X/Y/Z, providing significantly more working room than the UD-400/5X. The trunnion table offers A-axis tilting (-120 to +30 degrees) and C-axis rotation (360 degrees continuous) on a 600 mm (23.6 in) diameter table. Maximum workpiece weight reaches 400 kg (882 lb), more than double the UD-400's capacity.
The direct-drive spindle reaches 18,000 RPM with 22 kW (30 hp) through a CAT 40 taper. An optional 12,000 RPM CAT 50 spindle is available for shops needing higher torque for steel and titanium roughing. Roller gear cam drives on both rotary axes provide backlash-free positioning for simultaneous contouring.
Rapid traverse reaches 42 m/min across all linear axes. The standard 40-station ATC provides good tool storage for production work, with options up to 80 tools. The MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC handles complex 5-axis toolpath execution. At approximately 12,000 kg (26,455 lb), the UN-600/5X provides solid thermal mass for vibration damping.
Competitors include the DMG Mori DMU 65 monoBLOCK, Hermle C 400, Okuma MU-5000V, and Makino D500. New UN-600/5X machines price between $350,000 and $500,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 600 mm table diameter and 400 kg load capacity handle mid-size aerospace and industrial components that the UD-400/5X cannot accommodate
- 18,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle delivers high-speed cutting for aluminum and non-ferrous production work with excellent surface finish
- Optional CAT 50 spindle provides flexibility for shops running mixed materials including steel and titanium
- Roller gear cam drives on both rotary axes ensure backlash-free positioning for smooth simultaneous 5-axis contouring
- 40-tool standard ATC with expansion to 80 tools supports production-level complexity and unattended operation
- SmoothAi control with AI-based spindle vibration detection improves surface quality and extends tool life
Limitations
- CAT 40 standard spindle limits heavy roughing capability; CAT 50 option adds cost and reduces maximum RPM to 12,000
- 400 kg workpiece weight limit may be restrictive for heavier steel and titanium forgings
- 550 mm Y-travel is tighter than some competitors in this table-size class
- At $350,000-$500,000, the UN-600/5X sits in a competitive price range with established alternatives from DMG Mori and Hermle

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New UN-600/5X machines price between $350,000 and $500,000 depending on spindle type (CAT 40 vs CAT 50), ATC capacity, and options. The CAT 50 spindle option adds approximately $15,000-$25,000 to the base price.
02
The UN-600/5X steps up significantly: 600 mm table vs 400 mm, 400 kg load vs 150 kg, larger travels (700x550x500 vs 550x400x400 mm), and an optional CAT 50 spindle. Choose the UD-400/5X for small precision parts; choose the UN-600/5X when your parts exceed the UD's size and weight limits.
03
Both are mid-size 5-axis machines from Mazak. The VARIAXIS i-600 is part of the more established VARIAXIS family and typically offers higher Y-travel. The UN-600/5X positions as a more cost-effective alternative with similar core capabilities. Evaluate both based on specific part requirements and total cost of ownership.
04
Choose CAT 40 if your work is predominantly aluminum, composites, or lighter alloys where 18,000 RPM speeds maximize productivity. Choose CAT 50 if you regularly machine steel, titanium, or Inconel where spindle torque and tool rigidity matter more than RPM. Many shops running mixed work go CAT 40 and manage steel operations with appropriate tooling strategies.
