Overview

The Mazak HCN series is one of the most widely deployed horizontal machining center families in the world, spanning pallet sizes from 400mm to 1,250mm. The lineup includes the HCN-4000, HCN-5000, HCN-5000S (single pallet), HCN-5000/50 (CAT 50), HCN-6000, HCN-8800, HCN-10800, and HCN-12800, covering everything from high-speed automotive component production to heavy-duty machining of large castings.

The smaller HCN-4000 and HCN-5000 run CAT 40 spindles with options from 12,000 to 30,000 RPM, delivering fast cycle times on aluminum and non-ferrous parts. The HCN-5000/50 and HCN-6000 step up to CAT 50 for shops cutting predominantly steel and cast iron. The big-bore models (HCN-8800, HCN-10800, HCN-12800) handle workpieces up to 2,400 mm (94.5 in) diameter with 10,000 RPM CAT 50 spindles and 955 Nm of torque.

All HCN machines feature a high-rigidity reinforced bed with strategically positioned ribs, linear roller guides on all axes, and cone coupling pallet clamping for consistent positioning accuracy. The X-axis uses a slanted design that enhances structural rigidity. Two-pallet changers come standard across the lineup, and every model integrates with PALLETECH flexible manufacturing system for multi-pallet automation cells.

The HCN series runs on MAZATROL SmoothG controls and is available in both standard and S (single-pallet) configurations. New HCN machines price from $250,000 for a base HCN-4000 to over $1,000,000 for a fully loaded HCN-12800. The used market is extensive, with machines from 2005-2020 trading actively between $60,000 and $400,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Widest pallet range of any single HMC series from 400mm to 1,250mm, letting shops standardize on one platform family across different part sizes
  • Extensive spindle menu from 12,000 RPM high-speed to 30,000 RPM ultra-high-speed on CAT 40, plus heavy-duty CAT 50 options
  • Proven PALLETECH integration across the entire lineup enables scaling from standalone two-pallet operation to full FMS cells
  • Huge installed base worldwide means readily available parts, experienced service technicians, and a strong used-machine market
  • Linear roller guides on all axes balance rigidity and speed, with slanted X-axis design enhancing structural stiffness during heavy cuts
  • Single-pallet S variants available for shops that need horizontal capability without two-pallet changer footprint

Limitations

  • Standard HCN models are being superseded by HCN NEO; new-build availability may be limited in some markets
  • Older HCN models with Matrix or Matrix 2 controls lack the touchscreen interface of SmoothG
  • The jump from HCN-6000 to HCN-8800 is significant in size and cost, leaving a gap for shops needing 700-800mm pallets
  • MAZATROL-only control ecosystem limits appeal to shops standardized on other control platforms

Best For

Production shops standardizing on a single HMC platform family across multiple part sizes and material types Automotive suppliers running high-volume aluminum and cast iron production in PALLETECH cells Job shops looking for their first HMC with a clear upgrade path to multi-pallet automation Budget-conscious shops considering used HCN machines from the extensive secondary market Large-part manufacturers needing HCN-8800 or HCN-12800 class machines for castings and heavy equipment Contract manufacturers requiring deep ATC capacity (up to 330 tools) for high-mix production

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the HCN and HCN NEO?

The HCN NEO is the updated platform with improved energy efficiency, latest-generation SmoothG control, and enhanced thermal management. The standard HCN shares the same basic mechanical platform. For new purchases, the NEO is the current model. The standard HCN remains widely available used.

02 Should I get an HCN-5000 or HCN-5000/50?

The HCN-5000 with CAT 40 and up to 30,000 RPM is ideal for aluminum and light steel work where cycle time matters most. The HCN-5000/50 with CAT 50 at 10,000 RPM is better for shops cutting predominantly steel, cast iron, and harder materials needing more spindle torque.

03 What does a used Mazak HCN cost?

HCN-4000 and HCN-5000 machines from 2008-2015 trade between $60,000 and $180,000. Later models (2016-2022) with SmoothG run $150,000 to $300,000. Larger models like HCN-8800 command $200,000 to $500,000+ depending on hours and condition.

04 What is the HCN-5000S single-pallet variant?

The HCN-5000S removes the second pallet and pallet changer, reducing footprint and price. It suits dedicated production cells running the same part continuously and shops with floor space constraints.
