Overview
The Mazak HCN-5000 NEO is the latest-generation 500mm horizontal machining center from Mazak, upgrading the proven HCN-5000 platform with MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC, enhanced thermal management, improved energy efficiency, and Industry 4.0 connectivity. The NEO generation represents Mazak's current flagship in the 500mm HMC class.
Axis travels of 730 x 730 x 800 mm (28.7 x 28.7 x 31.5 in) on 500 x 500 mm pallets carry over from the predecessor. The 18,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle delivers 37 kW (50 hp) with 221 Nm of torque, providing excellent high-speed capability for aluminum and non-ferrous production. The CAT 50 variant (HCN-5000/50 NEO) is available with a 10,000 RPM spindle for heavier steel and cast iron work.
Rapid traverse rates hit 60 m/min across all axes. The standard two-pallet changer keeps spindle utilization high. Tool storage starts at 40 positions and scales to 348 with expanded magazines. Maximum workpiece weight reaches 500 kg (1,102 lb).
NEO-specific enhancements include SmoothAi CNC with AI-based spindle vibration detection, Intelligent Thermal Shield for active thermal compensation, Smooth Process Support for process monitoring, and enhanced connectivity through Mazak iSMART Factory integration. Energy consumption is reduced through intelligent hydraulic and cooling management.
Competitors include the Okuma MB-5000HII, DMG Mori NHX 5000, and Makino a51nx. New HCN-5000 NEO machines price between $375,000 and $500,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- SmoothAi CNC with AI-based spindle vibration detection automatically adjusts machining conditions for better surface finish and extended tool life
- 18,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle with 37 kW delivers fast cycle times on aluminum and non-ferrous production work
- Tool magazine scales from 40 to 348 positions, providing massive flexibility for high-mix production environments
- Intelligent Thermal Shield maintains tight tolerances through temperature variations across production shifts
- PALLETECH automation integration is one of the most proven FMS systems in the industry for scaling production
- CAT 50 variant available for shops needing heavier cutting in steel and cast iron without stepping to a larger platform
Limitations
- 500 kg pallet load limits fixture weight for heavy tombstone setups compared to 630mm-class HMCs
- CAT 40 standard limits heavy roughing in hardened steel; shops cutting predominantly ferrous should consider CAT 50 variant
- 13,600 kg machine weight is lighter than some competitors, potentially offering slightly less rigidity during aggressive cutting
- Premium pricing for the NEO generation compared to used HCN-5000 units on the secondary market

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New HCN-5000 NEO machines start around $375,000 for base configuration. With expanded ATC, high-pressure coolant, probing, and PALLETECH automation, expect $425,000-$500,000+. PALLETECH systems add $150,000-$400,000+ depending on pallet count.
02
The NEO generation adds MAZATROL SmoothAi with AI-based spindle vibration detection, Intelligent Thermal Shield for active thermal compensation, improved energy efficiency through on-demand hydraulics, and enhanced IoT connectivity for factory integration. The core mechanical platform is evolutionary from the prior generation.
03
Used HCN-5000 units from 2008-2020 sell for $75,000-$250,000, representing significant savings. The NEO adds SmoothAi intelligence, better thermal management, and modern connectivity. For high-precision work requiring the latest thermal compensation, the NEO is worth the premium. For general production where older controls suffice, used units offer excellent value.
04
Both are top-tier 500mm HMCs. The Okuma offers faster tool-to-tool time (0.9 vs 1.3 sec) and Thermo-Friendly Concept. The Mazak NEO counters with SmoothAi intelligence, deeper PALLETECH integration, and higher ATC capacity (up to 348 vs 340). Both are excellent choices -- the decision often depends on control preference and automation plans.
