Overview

The Hurco VMX60SRTi is the largest swivel-head rotary table 5-axis in Hurco's lineup, combining 60 inches of X travel with a B/C swivel-head rotary table configuration built for heavy, oversized parts. When parts are too big or too heavy for trunnion-style 5-axis machines, this is where Hurco sends you.

Travels are 1,524 x 660 x 610 mm (60 x 26 x 24 in) with a fixed table of 1,676 x 660 mm (66 x 26 in) rated for 1,360 kg (3,000 lb). The integrated 599 mm (23.6 in) rotary table handles 500 kg (1,100 lb) of rotating load. B-axis swivels +/-92 degrees, C-axis rotates 360 degrees. That's a massive work envelope for 5-axis machining — few competitors offer this combination of travel and table load at this price point.

The spindle runs 12,000 RPM through a CAT 40 / Big Plus taper, delivering 36.5 kW (48 hp) of peak power with 118 Nm (87 ft-lbs) of torque at 2,900 RPM. This is the most powerful spindle in Hurco's SRT lineup, reflecting the larger cuts this machine can take on bigger workpieces. The 40-tool ATC keeps tooling loaded with 75 mm max diameter and 249 mm max length.

Rapids run 32 m/min (1,259 ipm) on X/Y and 24 m/min (945 ipm) on Z. Rotary axis rapids are fast: B-axis at 90 RPM and C-axis at 100 RPM, enabling quick repositioning during indexed operations. WinMax control handles everything from conversational programming to full simultaneous 5-axis from CAM.

At 10,900 kg (23,980 lb), this is a heavy machine requiring a proper reinforced foundation. Floor space is 5,662 x 3,921 mm (223 x 154 in) and power draw is 70 KVA. The machine's mass provides excellent vibration damping for heavy cuts on large parts.

New pricing runs $320,000-$420,000. This machine competes with the Mazak VARIAXIS i-700 and DMG MORI DMU 80 P in the large-format 5-axis market.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 60 inches of X travel with 5-axis swivel-head access covers oversized parts that most 5-axis machines can't reach
  • 1,360 kg (3,000 lb) table load supports heavy steel castings and forgings without weight concerns
  • 36.5 kW (48 hp) spindle is the most powerful in Hurco's SRT lineup, driving through large cuts aggressively
  • 90 RPM B-axis rapid is the fastest in the VMX SRT family, minimizing repositioning time
  • 10,900 kg machine weight provides excellent vibration damping for heavy cuts on large workpieces
  • 66 x 26 inch fixed table accommodates large workpieces and multi-part fixturing setups

Limitations

  • 5,662 x 3,921 mm footprint requires substantial floor space that many shops cannot dedicate
  • 32/24 m/min linear rapids are slower than smaller VMX models, adding non-cutting time on complex programs
  • 70 KVA power draw requires serious electrical infrastructure planning
  • CAT 40 taper may be undersized for the heaviest cuts this machine's envelope and power can support
  • 10,900 kg weight requires a reinforced concrete foundation designed for concentrated dynamic loads

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX60SRTi cost?

New pricing runs $320,000-$420,000 depending on options. Through-spindle coolant, probing, and chip management systems are essential at this machine size. Used machines from 2016-2021 sell for $180,000-$280,000 depending on hours and condition.

02 How does the VMX60SRTi compare to the VMX60Ui trunnion model?

The SRTi handles 1,360 kg vs 400 kg on the table, has a larger fixed table (66x26 vs 19.7" rotary), 90 mm more Z travel (610 vs 520 mm), and faster B/C rapids. The Ui has a simpler trunnion mechanism and costs $70-90K less. Choose the SRTi for heavy, large parts; the Ui for lighter parts where trunnion accuracy is preferred.

03 Should I consider a 50-taper machine at this size?

For heavy steel work, a 50-taper spindle provides significantly more rigidity and power. The VMX60SRTi's 40-taper CAT 40 is adequate for aluminum and moderate steel work, but for production heavy-metal cutting, consider Hurco's HM1700Ri (CAT 50) or competitors' 50-taper 5-axis offerings.

04 What foundation requirements does the VMX60SRTi have?

Plan for a reinforced concrete pad at least 250 mm thick, designed for 10,900 kg static load plus dynamic cutting forces. Anchor bolts are critical. Hurco provides a detailed foundation plan with recommended reinforcement and grouting specifications.

05 Can I run the VMX60SRTi as a 3-axis machine?

Yes. The fixed table can be used as a standard 3-axis work surface with the full 1,360 kg load capacity. Many shops use the SRTi as a dual-purpose machine — 5-axis work on the rotary table and large 3-axis work on the surrounding fixed table area.
