Overview
The Hurco VM10UHSi is the high-speed variant of Hurco's compact trunnion 5-axis platform. Where the standard VM10Ui runs a 12,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle, the UHSi upgrades to a 20,000 RPM BT30 spindle optimized for small tooling and high-speed finishing in aluminum and softer alloys. It's built for shops cutting small, intricate parts where surface speed matters more than raw horsepower.
Travels match the standard VM10Ui at 533 x 406 x 483 mm (21 x 16 x 19 in). The trunnion table is 198 mm (7.8 in) in diameter with a 150 kg (330 lb) capacity, A-axis range of +30/-110 degrees, and 360-degree C-axis rotation. Same compact footprint at 3,203 x 3,383 mm (126 x 133 in), same 25 RPM rotary rapids.
The 20,000 RPM BT30 spindle produces 8.5 kW (11.4 hp) peak with 5.4 Nm (4.0 ft-lbs) of torque at 600 RPM. That torque number tells you everything about this machine's intended use case — it's a finishing spindle, not a roughing spindle. With small-diameter endmills at 20K RPM, you'll achieve excellent surface finishes on aluminum medical components, watch parts, and electronic housings. The BT30 taper limits you to smaller tooling, but that's the trade-off for spindle speed.
The 20-tool ATC handles BT30 tooling with a max tool weight of 3 kg (6.6 lb) and max diameter of 80 mm (3.15 in). That's fewer tools and smaller cutters than the CAT 40 variant, but for high-speed finishing work, you rarely need more than 15-18 tools per job.
WinMax control with 3D DXF import remains the standard, bringing Hurco's conversational 5-axis programming to this high-speed platform. The machine weighs 3,102 kg (6,825 lb) and draws only 15 KVA — modest enough for most shop electrical panels.
New pricing runs $130,000-$170,000. Used machines are scarce since this is a lower-volume model. For shops debating between this and a Fanuc RoboDrill with a bolt-on trunnion, the Hurco offers integrated 5-axis and conversational programming in one package.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 20,000 RPM spindle delivers excellent surface finish on aluminum and soft alloys with small-diameter tooling
- Compact integrated trunnion 5-axis eliminates the accuracy and rigidity issues of bolt-on rotary tables
- WinMax conversational control with 3D DXF import makes 5-axis programming accessible without CAM software
- Smallest footprint in Hurco's 5-axis lineup at 3,203 x 3,383 mm, fitting in tight shop layouts
- BT30 taper is ideal for the small tooling and light cuts this machine was designed for
- Low 15 KVA power requirement works with standard shop electrical infrastructure
Limitations
- 5.4 Nm (4.0 ft-lbs) of torque is extremely low — this machine cannot rough steel or hard alloys effectively
- BT30 taper limits tool selection and rigidity compared to CAT 40 machines in the same size class
- 20-tool ATC is limiting for complex multi-tool 5-axis jobs that need more cutter variety
- 198 mm (7.8 in) trunnion table restricts part size to very small components only
- Limited resale market due to low production volume makes used machines harder to find and sell

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing runs $130,000-$170,000 depending on configuration. The UHSi commands a $10-15K premium over the standard VM10Ui due to the high-speed spindle and BT30 tooling system. Used machines are scarce since this is a lower-volume model.
02
The UHSi swaps the 12,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle for a 20,000 RPM BT30 spindle. You gain spindle speed for finishing but lose torque (4.0 vs 35.2 ft-lbs) and tool size capacity. The UHSi also has a 20-tool ATC versus 24 on the standard model. Choose the UHSi for high-speed aluminum finishing, the Ui for general-purpose work.
03
It can make light cuts in mild steel with appropriate tooling and conservative parameters, but the 4.0 ft-lbs of torque makes it impractical for production steel cutting. This machine is designed for high-speed machining of aluminum, brass, plastics, and other soft materials.
04
BT30 toolholders are generally less expensive than CAT 40, but the selection is more limited. High-speed BT30 holders with proper balance ratings for 20K RPM can be pricey. Plan on spending $150-$300 per holder depending on the type. Shrink-fit holders are recommended for best runout at high speeds.
05
Yes. The WinMax control is identical across all Hurco 5-axis machines. Conversational programming, 3D DXF import, NC/Conversational Merge, and standard G-code capability are all included. Programs written on one Hurco can be transferred to any other Hurco with the same axis configuration.
