Overview
The Haas ST-45L is the long-bed extension of the ST-45 large-bore turning center, stretching the Z-axis to 2,032 mm (80 in) for long-shaft, pipe, and tubular work that exceeds the standard ST-45's 1,118 mm (44 in) reach. It retains the same 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore, A2-11 spindle nose, and 457 mm (18 in) chuck that define the ST-45 platform.
The 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle drives through a 2-speed gearbox, producing 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) of torque at 150 RPM with a max speed of 1,400 RPM. The optional XP high-performance spindle bumps output to 41.0 kW (55 hp) and 2,847 Nm (2,100 ft-lb) for aggressive roughing on long, heavy workpieces. Axis travels are 508 mm (20 in) in X and 2,032 mm (80 in) in Z, with rapids at 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) on both axes.
The ST-45L is purpose-built for oil and gas shops threading long pipe, coupling manufacturers machining extended tubular components, and heavy industrial facilities turning long shafts that must pass through the 7-inch bore. The 80-inch bed handles workpieces that would require the ST-55 on the standard ST-45 — but with the ST-45's more manageable footprint and price point.
The 12-station BOT turret is standard, with optional BMT75 live tooling and C-axis available. The MT5 tailstock supports long workpieces during turning. The NGC control handles conversational programming, G-code, and canned turning cycles.
Starting at approximately $257,995, the ST-45L fills a critical niche between the standard ST-45 and the massive ST-55. Shops that need long-bed large-bore capacity without the ST-55's 31,000 lb weight class and $356K price tag get a capable machine at a significantly lower investment.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2,032 mm (80 in) Z-axis travel handles long pipe, shaft, and tubular work that the standard ST-45 cannot reach at 1,118 mm
- Same 7.0-inch spindle bore and A2-11 spindle nose as the ST-45, providing large through-bore capacity for pipe and hollow components
- 40 hp spindle with 1,400 ft-lb torque through a 2-speed gearbox delivers heavy material removal on long workpieces
- Optional XP spindle upgrade to 55 hp and 2,100 ft-lb for the most demanding oil and gas roughing applications
- At ~$258K starting, significantly cheaper than the ST-55 ($356K) while matching its 80-inch Z-axis travel
- MT5 tailstock provides critical support for long, heavy workpieces during turning operations
Limitations
- 1,400 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter work and aluminum finishing
- Estimated 27,000 lb machine weight requires heavy-duty rigging, reinforced flooring, and careful site preparation
- 80-inch bed creates a substantial floor space requirement that many shops cannot accommodate
- 18-inch chuck and large spindle assembly result in longer acceleration and deceleration times between operations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The ST-45L starts at approximately $257,995. With the XP spindle, BMT75 live tooling, tailstock, chip conveyor, and high-pressure coolant, configured prices reach $310,000-$340,000. The long-bed premium over the standard ST-45 is approximately $70,000.
02
Both have 80-inch Z-axis travel, but they differ significantly in bore and power. The ST-55 has a 12.5-inch bore versus the ST-45L's 7.0-inch bore, 55 hp versus 40 hp, and 4,250 ft-lb versus 1,400 ft-lb of torque. The ST-55 weighs 31,000 lb versus the ST-45L's ~27,000 lb. Choose the ST-45L when 7-inch bore is sufficient. Choose the ST-55 when you need the largest bore Haas offers.
03
Yes, with the optional BMT75 turret and C-axis. Live tooling at 4,000 RPM enables cross-drilling, milling, and tapping on long parts without a second setup. This is valuable for pipe flanges and couplings that require cross-holes and bolt patterns along the length of the workpiece.
04
At approximately 27,000 lb, the ST-45L requires a reinforced concrete floor, typically 10-12 inches minimum thickness with rebar, and level to within 0.001 inch per foot. The 80-inch bed adds significant length to the machine footprint. Consult your Haas HFO dealer for a site survey before purchase.
