Overview
The Haas ST-35LY is the long-bed, Y-axis variant of the ST-35 big-bore platform, combining the 40 hp spindle and 102 mm (4 in) bar capacity of the ST-35 with extended Z-axis travel and full mill-turn capability. With 1,016 mm (40 in) of cutting length, a 12-station BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling, and +/-50.8 mm (+/-2.0 in) of Y-axis travel, this machine handles long shaft work with off-center milling, drilling, and tapping in a single setup.
The A2-8 spindle delivers 29.8 kW (40 hp) with 542 Nm (400 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM and a max speed of 3,200 RPM. The optional gearbox pushes torque to 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) at 150 RPM for heavy interrupted cuts on large-diameter forgings and castings. The 117.3 mm (4.62 in) spindle bore and 305 mm (12 in) chuck give this machine serious big-bore capability.
The BMT-65 live tooling turret runs at 6,000 RPM with 3.7 kW (5 hp), allowing cross-drilling, flat milling, keyway cutting, and tapping operations along the full 40-inch working length. C-axis positioning holds +/-0.01 degrees. The Y-axis eliminates the need to move long parts to a separate mill for off-center features, saving setup time and eliminating the accuracy loss from re-fixturing.
What separates the ST-35LY from the ST-30LY is the bigger bore and more power. The ST-30LY runs a 30 hp spindle with A2-8 nose and 101.6 mm bar capacity. The ST-35LY steps up to 40 hp with 542 Nm of standard torque, giving it significantly more muscle for heavy roughing on large-diameter, long workpieces. The machine weighs approximately 8,300 kg (18,300 lb), providing excellent vibration damping for long overhang cuts.
Priced at approximately $135,000-$170,000 configured, the ST-35LY is the most capable long-bed Y-axis lathe in the Haas lineup. It competes with the Mazak QT-350MSY and Okuma LB4000 EX II MY, both of which cost $50,000 or more above the Haas. For shops turning long shafts, hydraulic cylinders, and pipe fittings that also need secondary milling operations, the ST-35LY delivers big-bore mill-turn capability at the Haas price point. Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 40 hp spindle with 542 Nm standard torque and optional 1,898 Nm gearbox handles aggressive roughing on large-diameter, long workpieces
- 1,016 mm (40 in) cutting length covers long shafts, hydraulic cylinders, and extended components that shorter machines cannot reach
- 102 mm (4.0 in) bar capacity and 117.3 mm spindle bore handle large-diameter bar stock, tube, and pipe work
- BMT-65 turret with Y-axis and 6,000 RPM live tooling provides full mill-turn capability along the entire 40-inch working length
- 305 mm (12 in) chuck on A2-8 nose gives heavy-duty workholding for large-diameter parts without stepping up to the ST-40 frame
- Priced $50,000+ below Mazak QT-350MSY and Okuma LB4000 EX II MY long-bed equivalents
Limitations
- 3,200 RPM max spindle speed limits surface footage on small-diameter finishing and high-speed aluminum work
- 3.7 kW (5 hp) live tooling motor is shared across the ST Y-axis lineup and feels underpowered for aggressive milling on large parts
- Long-bed configuration requires significantly more floor space than the standard ST-35 or ST-35Y
- No sub-spindle option means parts requiring back-working need a second operation or separate machine

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $135,000. Common configurations with programmable tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and bar feeder interface run $150,000-$170,000. The programmable tailstock is practically required for long shaft work and adds about $5,000.
02
The ST-35LY is the long-bed version. Both share the same 40 hp spindle, BMT-65 turret, and bar capacity. The difference is Z-axis travel: 1,016 mm (40 in) on the ST-35LY versus approximately 660 mm (26 in) on the ST-35Y. If your parts fit within 26 inches, save money and floor space with the ST-35Y.
03
The ST-35LY has a more powerful spindle (40 hp vs 30 hp), larger bar capacity (102 mm vs 101.6 mm), and significantly more torque (542 Nm vs 407 Nm standard). Both have 40 inches of Z-travel and Y-axis live tooling. The ST-35LY is the choice when you need more power for heavy roughing on large-diameter parts.
04
For long shaft work, practically yes. Parts over 3-4 times their diameter in length will deflect under cutting forces without tailstock support, causing taper, chatter, and poor surface finish. The programmable tailstock positions automatically and retracts for part loading, eliminating manual intervention.
