Haas EC-1700ZT

The Haas EC-1700ZT has the largest envelope in the EC-1600 family, with 68 × 50 × 50 in (1,727 × 1,270 × 1,270 mm) of travel. Its Z travel equals its Y travel, which makes it a machine for deep, boxy parts as much as for long ones.

Compared with the EC-1600ZT, which has 64 in (1,626 mm) of X and 40 in (1,016 mm) of Z, the EC-1700ZT adds length on both axes and a bigger rotary. The A-axis block lists a 39.37 in (1,000 mm) platter, a 68 × 41.5 in (1,727 × 1,054 mm) A-axis table and an 80 in (2,032 mm) maximum part swing. The drive figures are those of a heavy positioning rotary: 2,000 ft-lbf (2,712 N·m) of rotational torque, a 4,000 ft-lbf (5,423 N·m) brake, a 500:1 gear ratio and 36°/sec, with ± 30 arc-sec indexing accuracy and 15 arc-sec repeatability. Load on the platter is 10,000 lb (4,536 kg).

One thing to clear up before ordering: the spec table also gives a 64 × 36 in (1,626 × 914 mm) table size with 7 T-slots on 4.92 in (125 mm) centers, which is smaller than the 68 × 41.5 in A-axis table. Ask Haas which dimensions apply to the configuration you are buying, and design fixtures from the drawing, not from either figure.

Spindle and tool changer figures are shared with the rest of the family: 30 hp (22.4 kW), 340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) at 700 rpm, 7,500 rpm, CT or BT 50, and 50+1 tools up to 20 in (508 mm) long. Rapids are 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). At that rate a move across the full 68 in of X is slow, and each tool change takes 12.6 s chip-to-chip, so the machine pays off on long cuts in big parts, not on short cycles. Thrust is 8,000 lbf (35,586 N) on Y and Z and 4,000 lbf (17,793 N) on X. Haas lists a starting price of US$416,995.
