Overview

A 15 in (381 mm) chuck, a two-speed gearbox and 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) of spindle torque at 150 rpm put the Haas DS-40Y in a different class from the smaller DS lathes. It turns parts up to 27.5 in (699 mm) in diameter and 44 in (1,118 mm) long, passes 4 in (102 mm) bar through a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) spindle bore, and adds a Y axis, live tooling and a second spindle to finish the back of the part.

The main spindle is geared, not belted. Rated 40 hp (29.8 kW) with a 2,400 rpm top speed, it is built for large-diameter steel at low surface speeds. Haas also lists an XP option on the same gearbox with 55 hp (41 kW) and 2,100 ft-lbf (2,847 N·m) at 150 rpm. It is an option, and it raises the supply requirement to 105 A at 220 VAC or 53 A at 440 VAC, against 70 A and 35 A for the base machine.

The sub-spindle is a serious spindle in its own right: a 10 in (254 mm) chuck on an A2-6 nose, 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 300 ft-lbf (406.7 N·m) at 500 rpm. It runs to 3,400 rpm alone and synchronizes with the main spindle at up to 2,400 rpm. Its drawbar bore is Ø 3.03 in × 35.8 in deep (Ø 77 mm × 909.3 mm), so a shaft can be drawn well into the second spindle for work on its far end.
