Overview
The DN Solutions PUMA 3100 ULY is the ultra-long-bed Y-axis variant of the 3100 turning center — the longest bed available in the 3100 class. With 2,550 mm (100 in) of Z-axis travel yielding 2,445 mm (96 in) of max turning length, it's designed for shops that need to process long shafts and cylindrical components with off-center milled features, all in a single setup.
The spindle delivers the same 26 kW (35 hp) with 1,123 Nm (828 ft-lb) of torque at 2,800 RPM through a 12-inch (305 mm) chuck. These are the same specs across every 3100 variant — the bed length changes, the spindle doesn't. Max turning diameter stays at 376 mm (15 in).
The Y-axis provides +/-52.5 mm (105 mm total, 4.1 in) of off-center travel. With 5,000 RPM live tooling on the 12-station turret and C-axis control, the ULY can mill keyways, drill cross-holes, tap off-center features, and machine flats along parts approaching 2.5 meters in length. On a shaft that long, the ability to complete both turning and milling in one clamping is not just convenient — it eliminates cumulative setup errors that degrade positional accuracy.
X-axis travel is 260 mm (10 in) with rapids at 24 m/min on X, 30 m/min on Z, and 10 m/min on Y. The machine weighs 9,500 kg (20,944 lb) — the heaviest 3100 variant, reflecting the ultra-long bed casting. Footprint stretches to approximately 5,900 mm (232 in) long by 2,394 mm (94 in) wide.
The FANUC 0i-TF Plus control handles the multi-axis coordination. The ULY is the top of the 3100 range for shops that need maximum turning length with full Y-axis capability. If your parts fit within the XLY's 1,745 mm, save the floor space. But if you're routinely turning shafts over 1.7 meters with milled features, the ULY is the only 3100 that covers the envelope.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2,445 mm turning length is the longest available in the 3100 class — handles shafts approaching 8 feet
- Y-axis with 105 mm travel enables off-center milling along the full ultra-long bed length
- Same proven 1,123 Nm torque spindle as the standard-bed 3100 Y
- 5,000 RPM live tooling with C-axis creates a full mill-turn center for long parts
- 9,500 kg mass provides excellent vibration damping for heavy turning on long workpieces
- Eliminates cumulative setup errors from re-fixturing long shafts between lathe and mill
Limitations
- 5.9 meter footprint requires significant floor space planning
- 2,800 RPM spindle ceiling limits surface speed on small-diameter features
- 9,500 kg weight needs reinforced foundations
- Highest price in the 3100 Y-axis lineup — only justified if your work exceeds the XLY's 1.7-meter reach

Frequently Asked Questions
01
UL stands for ultra-long bed, and Y indicates Y-axis capability. The ULY combines the longest available bed in the 3100 class (2,550 mm Z travel) with a programmable Y-axis for off-center milling operations. It's the maximum-reach Y-axis variant.
02
The ULY extends Z-axis travel from 1,850 mm to 2,550 mm, adding about 700 mm of additional turning length (2,445 mm vs 1,745 mm). The ULY is roughly 700 mm longer overall and about 1,300 kg heavier. Same spindle, chuck, Y-axis, and live tooling. Choose based on your max part length.
03
New machines run $180,000-$235,000 depending on options. The ultra-long bed with Y-axis represents the top configuration in the 3100 range. Used examples are less common due to the specialized nature.
04
Almost certainly, yes. With nearly 2.5 meters of turning length, a hydraulic steady rest is essential for any shaft work with a high length-to-diameter ratio. Multiple steady rest positions may be needed for very slender workpieces.
