Overview

The Studer Favorit (now marketed as the favoritCNC) is Studer's value-oriented CNC universal cylindrical grinding machine, offering Swiss grinding precision at the most accessible price point in the Studer lineup. It's designed for shops that need reliable, repeatable cylindrical grinding for individual and batch production without the premium cost of Studer's S-series machines.

Center height is 175 mm (6.9 in), with distances between centers of 400 mm (15.7 in), 650 mm (25.6 in), 1,000 mm (40 in), or 1,600 mm (63 in) depending on configuration. Maximum workpiece weight ranges from 80 kg (176 lb) on shorter models to 150 kg (330 lb) on the 1,000 mm and 1,600 mm versions. The grinding wheel takes up to 500 mm (20 in) diameter and 80 mm (3.15 in) wide, driven by an 11.5 kW spindle at up to 2,810 RPM for external grinding. A high-frequency internal grinding spindle is available as an option.

The machine uses Studer's T-slide configuration with a cross-slide arrangement that provides excellent rigidity. While the Favorit doesn't use the StuderGuide guideway system found on the S-series, it does use precision-ground guideways that deliver accuracy appropriate for its class. The turret wheel head offers two external grinding wheel positions, and an optional internal grinding attachment extends versatility.

Programming is handled by StuderPictogramming on a Fanuc control, the same intuitive graphical interface used across the entire Studer range. StuderTechnology software is included for automatic grinding parameter calculation. The Favorit also supports Studer's optional StuderGRIND software modules for complex grinding operations like thread grinding and form grinding.

The machine weighs approximately 5,100 kg (11,200 lb). Studer positions the Favorit as having the best price-to-performance ratio of any machine in their portfolio. New machines typically price in the $180,000-$280,000 range depending on configuration. Used units from 2015-2022 appear in the $80,000-$160,000 range. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Best price-to-performance ratio in the Studer lineup, bringing Swiss cylindrical grinding technology to shops that can't justify S-series pricing
  • StuderPictogramming and StuderTechnology software are identical to the premium S-series, so operators can move between machines without retraining
  • Four distance-between-centers options (400 to 1,600 mm) provide flexibility to match the machine to your specific workpiece range
  • Turret wheel head with two external grinding wheel positions allows roughing and finishing in a single setup without manual wheel changes
  • Fanuc control platform means widely available service support and familiar operation for shops already running Fanuc-based equipment
  • Optional StuderGRIND software modules add thread grinding, form grinding, and other specialized cycles without upgrading to a more expensive machine

Limitations

  • 175 mm center height limits maximum workpiece diameter compared to the S41's 225/275 mm, restricting large-diameter shaft work
  • Does not use StuderGuide guideways, so surface finish and damping characteristics won't match the S-series at the finest tolerance levels
  • 11.5 kW spindle power is adequate for most work but may limit metal removal rates on aggressive roughing of hardened steel
  • No linear motor drives, relying on ballscrews which will eventually require backlash compensation as they wear
  • Internal grinding requires an optional attachment rather than being a standard integrated spindle like on the S41

Best For

Job shops and contract grinders that need Swiss cylindrical grinding precision at a price point that makes economic sense for their work mix Shops doing batch production of shafts, spindles, pins, and cylindrical components where the Favorit's consistent accuracy reduces scrap Facilities upgrading from manual cylindrical grinders where StuderPictogramming dramatically reduces the programming learning curve Production environments running multiple Studer machines where the Favorit handles less demanding work while S-series machines tackle critical parts Shops that need a versatile universal grinder handling both external and internal operations with the optional internal grinding spindle Companies in the 650-1,000 mm between-centers range that find Japanese alternatives less precise and American alternatives less refined

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Studer Favorit cost new and used?

New Studer Favorit (favoritCNC) machines typically run $180,000-$280,000 depending on distance between centers, spindle options, and accessories. Used units from 2015-2022 sell in the $80,000-$160,000 range. Studer positions the Favorit as having the best price-to-performance ratio in their portfolio, sitting well below the S31 and S41 in price while still delivering Swiss build quality and the same StuderPictogramming software.

02 What's the difference between the Studer Favorit and the S31/S33?

The main differences are in the guideway system and axis drives. The S31 and S33 use Studer's premium StuderGuide hydrodynamic/hydrostatic guideways and have more sophisticated axis drive options. The Favorit uses conventional precision-ground guideways and ballscrew drives. For most production cylindrical grinding within normal tolerances, the Favorit delivers excellent results. The S-series machines pull ahead when you're chasing the last few tenths of a micron on surface finish or roundness.

03 Can the Favorit do internal grinding?

Yes, but it requires an optional internal grinding attachment. The turret wheel head has provisions for mounting a high-frequency internal grinding spindle. When equipped, you can do both external and internal grinding in a single setup. However, unlike the S41 which can hold two integrated internal spindles, the Favorit's internal grinding capability is more basic and limited to one spindle.

04 Which distance between centers should I choose?

Studer offers the Favorit in four configurations: 400, 650, 1,000, and 1,600 mm between centers. The 650 mm model is the most popular for general job shop work, handling the majority of shaft and spindle sizes. The 1,000 mm version adds capacity for longer parts like drive shafts and hydraulic rods. Choose based on your longest typical workpiece, keeping in mind that a longer machine costs more and takes more floor space. The 400 mm model is ideal for high-production short-part work.

05 How does the Favorit compare to Japanese cylindrical grinders?

The Favorit competes with machines from Okuma, Toyoda, and Tsugami in the mid-range cylindrical grinder segment. Studer's advantage is typically in surface finish quality and grinding process intelligence (StuderTechnology software). Japanese machines often compete on price and may offer faster cycle times for production work. The Favorit's Fanuc control is a familiar platform for shops already running Japanese machine tools, easing the transition.
