Overview
The Soraluce FR 8000 is a floor-type 5-axis milling center built to deliver full simultaneous 5-axis machining on large-format workpieces. It combines the generous 8,000 mm (315 in) X-axis travel of Soraluce's floor-type platform with an integrated automatic universal milling head providing A and C axis rotation, enabling compound-angle machining of large aerospace structures, turbine components, and precision molds without workpiece repositioning.
Axis travels are 8,000 mm (315 in) in X, 3,500 mm (137.8 in) in Y, and 1,200 mm (47.2 in) in Z. The universal milling head provides full ±110-degree A-axis tilt and 360-degree continuous C-axis rotation for simultaneous 5-axis interpolation. The main spindle delivers up to 6,000 RPM at 60 kW (80.5 HP) through an HSK-A100 interface, providing the power for sustained heavy milling in steel, titanium, and Inconel on large structural workpieces.
The FR 8000's floor-type traveling column design allows workpieces of practically unlimited weight to be machined without a machine table capacity constraint. A built-in rotary table option (up to 10,000 kg) enables 4-axis part indexing. For shops that also perform precision boring, the FR 8000 can be equipped with Soraluce's boring bar attachment, extending its capability range without a separate machine.
Soraluce's Adaptive Control system, integrated with the Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl control, monitors spindle power and automatically adjusts feed rates to maintain optimal cutting conditions during long 5-axis surfacing passes on complex geometry. Positioning accuracy is ±0.008 mm (±0.00031 in) with angular accuracy of ±5 arcseconds on the 5-axis head. New FR 8000 machines price between $1,800,000 and $3,000,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Full simultaneous 5-axis motion on an 8,000 mm floor-type platform — enabling compound-angle machining of large structures that no trunnion-table 5-axis machine could physically accommodate
- 60 kW HSK-A100 spindle provides the power for heavy milling of large titanium, Inconel, and steel workpieces at depths of cut and feed rates that make long programs economically viable
- Floor-type design imposes no practical workpiece weight limit; 10,000 kg optional rotary table handles even the largest indexed workpieces without restriction
- Soraluce Adaptive Control prevents spindle overload during complex 5-axis surface passes where cutting conditions change continuously, protecting the tool and workpiece
- Interchangeable head compatibility extends the FR 8000 to include boring, right-angle milling, and other operations not possible with the standard universal head
- Active Vibration Control option enables aggressive machining at long spindle extensions without chatter degradation — critical for large contoured molds and dies
Limitations
- Starting price of $1.8M-$3M restricts this machine to large aerospace, energy, or heavy tooling shops where large-format 5-axis work is a core business
- 6,000 RPM spindle is not optimized for high-speed aluminum finish machining; programs requiring fine surface quality on aluminum at high RPM will be limited
- Universal milling head introduces additional thermal and geometric error sources not present in simpler spindle configurations — head calibration and compensation are essential
- Large installation footprint with floor guideway preparation adds 3-6 months of site preparation before the machine can be installed
- Soraluce's North American service presence is more limited than European coverage; US and Canadian customers should negotiate comprehensive service agreements

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The FR 8000 uses an automatic universal milling head that mounts to the spindle carrier and provides two additional CNC axes: an A-axis that tilts the spindle up to ±110 degrees, and a C-axis that rotates continuously at 360 degrees. These two rotational axes, combined with the three linear axes (X, Y, Z), provide full simultaneous 5-axis interpolation. The head is indexed and locked under program control for 3+2 positioning and can also interpolate continuously for true 5-axis surface machining.
02
The FR 8000's universal milling head achieves ±5 arcseconds angular positioning accuracy with the head indexing system. For high-precision aerospace applications requiring better angular accuracy, Soraluce offers measurement and compensation cycles using a calibration artifact and on-machine probing to compensate for residual head positioning errors.
03
Yes. Soraluce offers boring bar attachments and precision boring head accessories compatible with the FR 8000's spindle interface, enabling precision bore operations up to the spindle's quill extension range. For applications requiring both large-format 5-axis milling and precision boring in the same part program, the FR 8000's interchangeable head system handles the full operation sequence.
04
The Adaptive Control system continuously monitors spindle motor power consumption during cutting. When power exceeds a programmed threshold — indicating the tool is overloaded due to variable stock conditions, workpiece variations, or complex 5-axis geometry — the control automatically reduces the programmed feed rate to bring spindle load back within limits. This prevents tool breakage, spindle overload, and part damage during long unattended machining cycles on complex 5-axis programs.
05
The FR 8000 is compatible with all major 5-axis CAM platforms including OPEN MIND hyperMILL, Siemens NX CAM, Dassault CATIA V5/V6 NC, Mastercam, and Tebis. Soraluce provides validated postprocessors for these CAM systems. For aerospace customers using CATIA-based design environments, the CATIA NC postprocessor is particularly well-supported. Soraluce's applications team works with customers to validate 5-axis toolpaths for new programs.
