Overview
The Sodick AP450L is a mid-to-large oil-dielectric wire EDM from the AP series, offering 450 x 300 x 120 mm X/Y/Z travel for precision machining of motor core dies, electronic component tooling, and stamping dies where oil-based cutting delivers superior surface integrity. With a maximum workpiece weight of 100 kg and workpiece dimensions up to 600 x 400 x 100 mm, the AP450L extends the AP series work envelope to cover larger die plates.
The AP450L 450 mm X-axis travel addresses a common requirement in motor core die production: lamination dies for larger electric vehicle motors and industrial motor stators that exceed the 350 mm capacity of the AP350L. The machine supports wire diameters from 0.05 to 0.25 mm and uses Sodick linear motor drive architecture with a rigid gantry structure.
Oil dielectric provides corrosion-free, electrolysis-free cutting identical to the smaller AP models. For copper alloy lead frame dies, magnetic steel lamination tooling, and other materials sensitive to water dielectric chemistry, the AP450L oil system eliminates post-cut surface treatment steps.
At 6,300 kg machine weight and 2,185 x 2,015 mm footprint (3,800 x 3,450 mm installation space), the AP450L requires three-phase 13 kVA power and occupies the middle of the AP series lineup between the AP350L and AP650L.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 450 mm X-axis covers larger EV motor stator lamination dies exceeding AP350L capacity
- Oil dielectric provides corrosion-free cutting for sensitive materials
- Linear motor drives with rigid gantry deliver zero-backlash positioning
- Wire range from 0.05 to 0.25 mm balances micro-feature capability with roughing speed
- 600 x 400 mm max workpiece dimensions accommodate mid-size die plates
- High-speed eco-cut capability for up to 50% faster machining
Limitations
- 120 mm Z-axis limits to thin-section work only
- 100 kg workpiece weight limit constrains to medium tooling
- Oil dielectric requires fire suppression and ventilation
- Plus/minus 7 degree taper is conservative

Frequently Asked Questions
01
450 x 300 mm X/Y travel versus 350 x 350 mm. More X travel but less Y, suited for elongated die layouts. Both share 120 mm Z-axis, 100 kg capacity, and oil dielectric.
02
Motor core lamination dies use silicon steel punches where water dielectric corrosion affects punch life and lamination quality. Oil produces cleaner surfaces maintaining sharper edges.
03
Eco-cut optimizes wire consumption and cutting speed, achieving up to 50% faster machining on certain material/thickness combinations.
04
Yes. Oil dielectric prevents surface staining and micro-corrosion that water dielectric causes on austenitic stainless steels.
