Overview
The Sodick AP350L is a mid-size oil-dielectric wire EDM from the AP series, offering 350 x 350 x 120 mm X/Y/Z travel for precision machining of motor cores, electronic component dies, and stamping tooling where oil-based cutting provides superior surface integrity over water dielectric. With a maximum workpiece weight of 100 kg and workpiece dimensions up to 540 x 500 x 100 mm during submerged machining, the AP350L provides a larger work envelope than the AP250L while maintaining fine-wire capability.
The AP350L supports wire diameters from 0.05 to 0.25 mm and employs Sodick 4-axis linear motor drives with a gantry structure for frictionless, zero-backlash positioning. The machine precision is particularly evident in motor core die applications, where lamination punch-to-die clearances measured in single-digit microns demand positioning accuracy that ball-screw machines cannot reliably maintain.
Oil-dielectric machining eliminates the corrosion, electrolysis, and surface contamination effects that water dielectric causes on copper alloy, magnetic steel, and other sensitive die materials. The machine achieves plus/minus 7 degree taper at 100 mm plate thickness, adequate for motor core and electronic component tooling.
At 4,650 kg machine weight and 1,985 x 2,095 mm footprint (3,705 x 3,515 mm installation space), the AP350L fits into precision die shops without major facility modifications. Three-phase 13 kVA power is required.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 350 x 350 mm square travel provides larger work area than AP250L for mid-size motor core dies
- Oil dielectric eliminates corrosion and electrolysis on copper alloys and magnetic steels
- 4-axis linear motors deliver zero-backlash positioning for single-digit-micron clearances
- Wire range from 0.05 to 0.25 mm covers both micro-features and production roughing
- 4,650 kg footprint fits existing precision die shops without major modifications
- Square X/Y travel allows efficient cutting of symmetric motor core die patterns
Limitations
- Z-axis limited to 120 mm; not suitable for thick die blocks
- 100 kg workpiece weight limit restricts to lightweight precision components
- Oil dielectric requires fire suppression and enhanced ventilation
- Plus/minus 7 degree taper is conservative compared to standard wire EDMs
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
350 x 350 mm travel versus 250 x 150 mm. Workpiece capacity increases from 80 kg to 100 kg. Wire range is 0.05-0.25 mm versus 0.03-0.20 mm. The AP250L supports finer 0.03 mm wire for ultra-micro work.
02
The AP series targets thin-section precision work including motor core dies and lead frame tooling typically 10-80 mm thick. For thick workpieces, consider the AQ or AG series with 300-600 mm Z-axis.
03
Copper alloys, magnetic silicon steels, and stainless steels benefit most due to susceptibility to corrosion or electrolysis in water dielectric.
04
Yes. Oil dielectric produces excellent surface quality on hardened D2, H13, and M2 tool steels.
