Overview

The Okuma LU35II is a large-capacity twin-turret horizontal turning center based on the proven LB35 platform with the addition of a second turret for simultaneous cutting. The LU designation identifies it as a single-spindle, twin-turret configuration, providing the same 520 mm (20.5 in) turning diameter and heavy-duty construction as the LB35III but with the productivity advantage of dual-turret operation.

The main spindle delivers 26/18.5 kW (35/25 hp) at up to 3,000 RPM through an A2-11 spindle nose. Swing over bed is 720 mm (28.3 in), with standard turning length of 500 mm (19.7 in) and options extending to 2,000 mm (78.7 in). Bar capacity is 91 mm (3.6 in), and the 12-inch or 15-inch hydraulic chuck handles heavy workpieces.

The upper turret carries 12 stations with optional BMT driven tools, while the lower turret adds 8-10 stations for simultaneous OD operations. Both turrets cutting simultaneously—upper turret on OD roughing while lower turret performs grooving, for example—reduces cycle times by 25-40% over single-turret operation.

At approximately 9,800 kg (21,605 lb), the LU35II has massive thermal stability and vibration damping. Box way construction on both axes provides the rigidity needed for aggressive simultaneous cutting. Okuma's OSP-P300L control manages turret synchronization with Collision Avoidance System protection and Thermo-Friendly Concept thermal compensation.

The LU35II occupies a niche between the LU3000 EX (400 mm turning diameter) and the enormous LU7000 EX (900 mm turning diameter). It competes with twin-turret lathes from Doosan, Mazak, and DMG Mori in the large-capacity segment. Shops already running LB35 series single-turret lathes find the LU35II familiar in terms of work envelope and cutting performance, with the twin-turret architecture adding meaningful productivity. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Twin turrets bring 25-40% cycle time reduction to the proven LB35 platform's work envelope
  • 520 mm turning diameter handles large workpieces that mid-size twin-turret lathes can't accommodate
  • 9,800 kg mass with box ways provides excellent stability during simultaneous cutting from both turrets
  • 91 mm bar capacity covers large-diameter bar stock for production applications
  • Familiar LB35 work envelope for shops already running LB35III single-turret machines
  • Thermo-Friendly Concept and Collision Avoidance System protect accuracy and investment during production

Limitations

  • 3,000 RPM max spindle speed limits finishing performance on smaller diameter features within the turning range
  • Starting at $200K, the twin-turret premium adds $50-70K over a single-turret LB35III
  • 9,800 kg weight requires reinforced foundations and heavy rigging
  • Programming twin-turret simultaneous operations requires specialized training
  • The LU35II is an older platform; shops buying new should evaluate the LU4000 EX as an alternative

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does an Okuma LU35II cost?

New LU35II machines run $200,000-$300,000 depending on bed length and configuration. Standard bed configurations start around $200,000-$235,000. Long bed setups with driven tools and full options reach $270,000-$300,000. Used LU35 and LU35II machines from 2010-2018 sell for $80,000-$150,000.

02 Should I buy a LU35II or a LU4000 EX?

The LU4000 EX is Okuma's current-generation large twin-turret platform with 500 mm turning diameter (vs 520 mm on the LU35II), 40 hp (vs 35 hp), and the latest EX-generation features. The LU35II may be available at a lower price and is familiar to shops running the LB35 platform. For new purchases, most Okuma distributors recommend the LU4000 EX unless there's a specific compatibility reason to stay on the LU35 platform.

03 Can the LU35II handle shaft work?

Yes. With bed length options up to 2,000 mm and tailstock support, the LU35II handles long shaft turning with simultaneous cutting from both turrets. The twin-turret architecture is particularly productive on shafts requiring multiple diameter steps, grooves, and threads.

04 How does the LU35II compare to a single-turret LB35III?

Same spindle, swing, and turning diameter. The LU35II adds 8-10 lower turret stations and the ability to cut with both turrets simultaneously, reducing cycle times 25-40% on complex parts. The premium is $50,000-$70,000. For simple parts with few tools, the LB35III is sufficient; for complex parts at production volumes, the LU35II pays for its premium quickly.
