Overview
The Okuma LAW-F II is a twin-spindle opposed-spindle horizontal CNC lathe that scales up from the LAW-2S to handle larger parts with more spindle power. The F II designation indicates the second generation of the full-size LAW platform, with improvements in rigidity, thermal management, and control capability. With a maximum turning diameter of 350 mm (13.8 in) and maximum turning length of 500 mm (19.7 in) per spindle, it handles the mid-size shaft and fitting work common in automotive drivetrain, hydraulic, and industrial component manufacturing.
The main spindle delivers 22/18.5 kW (30/25 hp) at up to 4,000 RPM with 350 Nm (258 ft-lb) of torque through an A2-8 spindle nose. The sub-spindle delivers 15/11 kW (20/15 hp) at 5,000 RPM with 200 Nm (148 ft-lb). Bar capacity is 65 mm (2.56 in) through the main spindle, covering the broad range of bar stock sizes used in mid-size production turning. The 10-inch main chuck and 8-inch sub-spindle chuck handle both bar-fed and chucked work.
The main turret carries 12 stations in VDI 40 format and the sub-turret carries 12 stations in VDI 30. Both turrets support driven tools with optional Y-axis on the main turret for off-center milling. X-axis travel is 230 mm (9.1 in) per turret with Z-axis at 550 mm (21.7 in) for the main and 500 mm (19.7 in) for the sub-spindle. Rapid traverse is 30 m/min.
The LAW-F II's larger main spindle and VDI 40 turret provide significantly more cutting capability than the LAW-2S for aggressive roughing on larger parts. Okuma's Thermo-Friendly Concept and Collision Avoidance System are standard. The OSP-P300L control manages the complex dual-spindle, dual-turret configuration.
The LAW-F II competes with the Mazak Quick Turn 350MSY, DMG Mori CLX 550, and Doosan Puma 3100LSYB. Pricing runs $350,000-$500,000 new. Machine weight is approximately 9,500 kg (20,944 lb).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Larger 350 mm turning diameter and 65 mm bar capacity handle mid-size parts that exceed the LAW-2S envelope
- VDI 40 main turret provides the rigidity for aggressive roughing on larger-diameter steel and alloy parts
- 12 stations on both turrets provide ample tool capacity for complex complete-part machining without manual tool changes
- Optional Y-axis on the main turret enables off-center milling for features like flats, keyways, and cross-holes
- Opposed-spindle design produces finished parts in a single cycle, eliminating OP10/OP20 transfer between machines
- Second-generation design improvements in rigidity and thermal management over the original LAW-F platform
Limitations
- Sub-spindle at 15 kW is less powerful than the 22 kW main spindle, which can limit OP20 roughing capability on harder materials
- 350 mm turning diameter is still mid-range; shops with larger parts need dedicated full-size turning centers
- Capital cost of $350,000-$500,000 requires consistent dual-spindle utilization to justify versus two single-spindle machines
- OSP control with dual spindles and dual turrets creates complex programming that demands experienced operators
- 9,500 kg weight and dual-spindle footprint are larger than single-spindle alternatives in the same diameter class

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new LAW-F II typically runs $350,000-$500,000 depending on Y-axis option, driven tool packages, bar feeder, and parts handling. The dual-spindle dual-turret architecture provides complete-part capability that justifies the premium for shops running sufficient volume.
02
The LAW-F II has a larger 350 mm turning diameter versus 260 mm, more powerful main spindle (22 kW vs 18.5 kW), VDI 40 main turret versus VDI 30, 65 mm bar capacity versus 51 mm, and 12-station sub-turret versus 8-station. The LAW-F II handles larger parts with more tool capacity.
03
Y-axis is available as an option on the main turret, enabling off-center milling for features like flats, keyways, and hex shapes. The Y-axis combined with C-axis and driven tools provides significant mill-turn capability without needing a dedicated multitasking machine.
04
Yes, the 65 mm bar capacity with bar feeder integration handles bar-fed production, while the 10-inch main chuck accommodates chucked parts. The versatility to switch between bar and chuck work makes the LAW-F II suitable for both dedicated production and mixed-part job shop environments.
05
After OP10 machining, the sub-spindle advances on the Z2 axis, grips the part from the main spindle, and retracts for OP20 machining. The transfer is programmable for timing, grip position, and synchronization. The cutoff operation can occur before or during the transfer depending on part geometry.
