Overview
The Mazak SYNCREX is a Swiss-type CNC turning center that brings the MAZATROL conversational control to the sliding headstock world. Unlike traditional Swiss machines that rely on Fanuc or Mitsubishi controls, the SYNCREX runs on MAZATROL SmoothG with dedicated Swiss-style programming support. For shops that already run Mazak equipment, this eliminates the need to train operators on a completely different control platform.
The SYNCREX handles bar stock up to 38 mm (1.5 in) diameter and delivers the precision expected from Swiss-type architecture. The guide bushing supports the workpiece near the cutting zone, providing the rigidity needed for tight tolerances on long, slender parts with high length-to-diameter ratios. Main spindle speed reaches 10,000 RPM with 5.5 kW (7.4 hp), while the sub-spindle matches at 10,000 RPM for backworking operations.
Tooling capacity includes up to 39 tools across multiple gangs and cross-working positions, with live tool speeds up to 9,000 RPM. Y-axis capability on both main and sub-spindle sides enables off-center milling, drilling, and tapping operations. The B-axis on select models adds angular drilling and milling for complex medical and connector components.
The SYNCREX targets the same application space as Citizen, Star, and Tsugami Swiss machines but differentiates through the Mazak ecosystem advantage. Shops running Quick Turns and INTEGREXes can now add Swiss capability without learning a new control. New SYNCREX machines price between $200,000 and $350,000 depending on configuration. The machine competes well against the Citizen L20, Star SR-20J, and Tsugami SS327 in the 20-38mm bar diameter range.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- MAZATROL SmoothG control brings conversational programming to Swiss-type turning, reducing the learning curve for shops already running Mazak equipment
- 38 mm bar capacity covers the sweet spot for medical, connector, and precision component manufacturing
- Up to 39 tools across multiple gangs provides extensive tooling capacity for complex multi-feature parts
- Y-axis on both main and sub-spindle sides enables off-center operations without repositioning the part
- Guide bushing-less operation available for shorter parts where guide bushing support is not needed, expanding application flexibility
- B-axis option adds angular machining capability for complex medical implants and electronic connector components
- Integrates into existing Mazak fleet without requiring operators to learn a separate control ecosystem
Limitations
- 38 mm max bar capacity is smaller than some competing Swiss machines that handle 42 mm or larger stock
- Mazak is newer to the Swiss-type market compared to established players like Citizen, Star, and Tsugami with decades of Swiss-specific development
- MAZATROL advantage diminishes for shops without existing Mazak equipment, as Fanuc-based Swiss machines have a larger trained operator pool
- Starting at $200,000, the SYNCREX pricing is competitive but not significantly cheaper than established Swiss brands

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New SYNCREX machines range from $200,000 to $350,000 depending on model and configuration. B-axis and additional tooling capacity push toward the higher end. Used market is limited since this is a relatively recent addition to the Mazak lineup.
02
The SYNCREX matches Citizen and Star on core Swiss-type specs including bar capacity, spindle speed, and tooling. Its differentiator is the MAZATROL SmoothG control, which is advantageous for Mazak-standardized shops. Citizen and Star have deeper Swiss-specific application expertise and larger installed bases in the Swiss market.
03
Yes, the SYNCREX uses a guide bushing for standard Swiss-type operation, supporting the workpiece near the cutting zone for precision on long slender parts. Guide bushing-less operation is also available for shorter parts where guide bushing support is not necessary.
04
The SYNCREX machines all common Swiss-type materials including stainless steel, titanium, brass, aluminum, Inconel, and engineering plastics. The 10,000 RPM spindle and high-pressure coolant options support challenging materials used in medical and aerospace applications.
05
Yes, guide bushing-less operation is available for shorter parts with lower length-to-diameter ratios. This mode reduces bar remnant waste and simplifies setup for parts that do not require the additional support of a guide bushing.
