Overview

The Mazak MULTIPLEX W-200Y is the Y-axis equipped variant of the W-200 twin-spindle, twin-turret CNC turning center. The addition of 100 mm (4 in) of Y-axis travel on both turrets transforms the machine from a pure turning production cell into a capable mill-turn platform, enabling off-center milling, drilling, and tapping operations on both spindles simultaneously.

Each of the two symmetrical spindles runs at up to 5,000 RPM with 18.5 kW (25 hp) through 8-inch chucks. The max machining diameter is 320 mm (12.6 in) with 180 mm (7.09 in) of turning length. Each turret carries 12 tool positions with live tooling. The Y-axis on both turrets means off-center features like cross-holes, flats, keyways, and hexagonal profiles can be machined on both sides without refixturing.

The W-200Y is the most popular variant in the MULTIPLEX W lineup because most production parts requiring twin-spindle throughput also have at least some off-center features. The Y-axis premium is modest compared to the alternative of running parts on a separate milling machine after turning.

MAZATROL SmoothG handles programming for synchronized dual-spindle, dual-turret, dual-Y-axis operations. Automatic workpiece transfer between spindles. Axis travels: 195 mm X, 100 mm Y (+/-50 mm), 560 mm Z per turret. Rapids at 30 m/min. Bar capacity 65 mm (2.56 in). Machine weight approximately 7,800 kg (17,196 lb). New machines $250,000-$320,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y-axis on both turrets enables off-center milling, drilling, and tapping on both spindles simultaneously
  • Twin-spindle, twin-turret architecture doubles throughput while adding mill-turn capability
  • Each spindle independently runs at 18.5 kW and 5,000 RPM for full turning performance
  • 100 mm Y-axis travel handles most off-center features: cross-holes, flats, keyways, and hexagonal profiles
  • Eliminates secondary milling operation on separate VMC for most production turned parts
  • MAZATROL SmoothG synchronization simplifies complex dual-spindle, dual-Y-axis programming

Limitations

  • $250K-$320K is premium over the non-Y W-200 and more than two basic single-spindle lathes
  • 180 mm turning length restricts to short chucking work; longer parts need a different machine
  • 100 mm Y-axis is adequate but limits deep off-center pocket milling compared to dedicated VMC
  • Programming complexity increases significantly with Y-axis operations on both turrets simultaneously

Best For

High-volume production shops running parts with both turning and off-center milling features Automotive manufacturers producing hubs, flanges, and fittings with cross-holes and flats Shops wanting to eliminate the second-op VMC step on production turned parts with minor milling Production environments targeting maximum spindle utilization on mill-turn parts under 12.6 inches diameter Hydraulic and pneumatic component manufacturers producing valve bodies and connector fittings

Frequently Asked Questions

01 W-200Y cost?

New W-200Y starts around $250,000. Full production configuration with automation interface runs $300K-$320K. Premium over the non-Y W-200 is approximately $30K-$50K.

02 W-200Y vs W-200?

The Y adds 100 mm of off-center travel on both turrets. If any of your parts have cross-holes, flats, or off-center features, the Y-axis pays for itself by eliminating secondary milling operations.

03 W-200Y vs W-300Y?

W-300Y has larger 10-inch chucks, 16.93 inch max diameter, 8.86 inch turning length, and 150 mm Y-axis travel vs 100 mm. Choose based on part size: W-200Y for 8-inch class, W-300Y for 10-inch class.

04 What automation is available?

The MULTIPLEX W-200Y pairs with bar feeders for stock up to 65 mm diameter, gantry loaders (GL-100) for chuck work, and part catchers for automated unloading. The GL-100 gantry is a popular combination for lights-out production.
