Overview

The Mazak HQR-200MSY is a twin-spindle, twin-turret CNC turning center in the 8-inch chuck class, designed for high-volume production of complex medium-size parts. The HQR-200MSY steps up significantly from the HQR-150MSY with a larger chuck, greater turning envelope, and more spindle power for handling heavier workpieces.

The HQR-200MSY runs a 203 mm (8 in) main chuck with a maximum turning diameter of 343 mm (13.5 in) and maximum turning length of 861 mm (33.9 in) in standard configuration, or up to 1,326 mm (52.2 in) in the long-bed variant. The main spindle delivers 22 kW (30 hp) at up to 4,000 RPM through an A2-6 spindle nose with a 76 mm (2.99 in) spindle bore. Bar capacity is 65 mm (2.56 in).

The twin-turret configuration enables simultaneous machining from two directions on the same workpiece. Both turrets feature BMT live tooling with C-axis capability, and Y-axis on the upper turret allows off-center milling. The dual spindle with W-axis (sub-spindle travel) provides automatic part transfer for complete done-in-one processing of front and back features.

MAZATROL SmoothG handles the multi-channel programming for synchronized dual-turret operations with built-in collision avoidance. The 33.9-inch standard turning length is significantly more generous than the smaller HQR models, enabling production of longer shafts and components.

The HQR-200MSY competes with the Nakamura-Tome WTW-200, Index C200, DMG Mori NZX 2000, and Okuma MULTUS B200II. It is the mid-range model in the HQR lineup, offering substantially more turning envelope than the 100/150 models while remaining more compact and affordable than the HQR-250MSY. For production shops running 8-inch chuck work with complex features at volume, the HQR-200MSY delivers maximum throughput. Specs sourced from Mazak Corporation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 33.9-inch turning length handles significantly longer parts than the HQR-100/150 models
  • Twin-turret simultaneous cutting delivers 30-50% cycle time reduction on complex parts
  • 22 kW spindle power handles heavier cuts on 8-inch chuck workpieces
  • Long-bed option extends turning length to 52.2 inches for shaft work
  • 24 total tool positions with BMT live tooling on both turrets
  • MAZATROL SmoothG with collision avoidance manages dual-turret synchronization

Limitations

  • Starting at $280K, requires high-volume production to justify over single-turret alternatives
  • 8,000 kg machine weight requires substantial floor space and foundation preparation
  • Multi-channel programming complexity demands experienced operators and CAM support
  • Setup time for new jobs is significantly longer than single-turret machines

Best For

High-volume production of 8-inch chuck parts with complex turning and milling requirements Automotive drivetrain component manufacturing needing maximum throughput Aerospace fastener and fitting production requiring done-in-one processing Contract manufacturers running production campaigns on complex medium-size parts Shops needing twin-turret productivity with longer turning length than the HQR-100/150

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak HQR-200MSY cost?

New pricing runs $280,000-$450,000 depending on bed length and options. The long-bed variant adds approximately $30,000-$50,000.

02 HQR-200MSY vs HQR NEO?

The HQR NEO has 3 turrets for even more simultaneous machining. The HQR-200MSY has 2 turrets at lower cost and complexity. Both are twin-spindle 8-inch machines.

03 Standard bed vs long-bed?

Standard bed offers 861 mm (33.9 in) turning length. Long bed extends to 1,326 mm (52.2 in) for shafts and longer components. Choose based on your longest part requirement.

04 What makes twin turrets better than a single turret with more tools?

Twin turrets cut simultaneously, reducing cycle time. A 12-position single turret runs one tool at a time; twin 12-position turrets can engage two tools at once for balanced cutting.
