Overview

The Makino V33i-5XB is a compact 5-axis vertical machining center that adds a B/C trunnion rotary table to Makino's proven V33i high-speed milling platform. This configuration combines the V33i's well-regarded precision and high-speed spindle with full 5-axis capability, creating a versatile machine for die/mold finishing, medical devices, and precision components that need multi-axis access.

Axis travel of 450 x 350 x 300 mm (17.7 x 13.8 x 11.8 in) on X/Y/Z provides a compact but practical work envelope for small-to-medium precision components. The B-axis trunnion tilts through 120 degrees (+30 to -90) and the C-axis provides 360-degree continuous rotation. The trunnion configuration tilts the workpiece for optimal tool access while maintaining consistent chip evacuation.

The spindle runs at 30,000 RPM with an HSK-E40 taper, delivering 15 kW (20.1 hp). This high-speed spindle excels at fine finishing with small-diameter ball nose end mills, making it particularly effective for die/mold cavity finishing and medical component machining. The HSK-E40 taper provides better concentricity than HSK-A63 at high speeds while offering more rigidity than HSK-E25.

The 300 mm (11.8 in) diameter trunnion table handles workpieces up to 150 kg (331 lb). A 30-tool automatic tool changer provides adequate capacity for finishing operations. Rapid traverse of 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) covers the compact envelope efficiently. At approximately 5,500 kg (12,125 lb), the V33i-5XB provides excellent rigidity relative to its size. The Makino Pro 6 control with high-speed contour control enables smooth, precise 5-axis contouring. The V33i-5XB competes with the Roeders RXP 501, Yasda YBM 640V, and GF Mikron MILL S 400 U in the compact high-speed precision 5-axis segment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 30,000 RPM HSK-E40 spindle provides an excellent balance of high speed and rigidity for precision finishing with small tools
  • Proven V33i platform with added 5-axis capability combines established reliability with multi-axis versatility
  • Trunnion B/C configuration tilts workpiece for optimal chip evacuation and consistent tool engagement angles
  • 150 kg table load is generous for a compact precision machine, accommodating substantial fixtures and workpieces
  • HSK-E40 taper provides better high-speed concentricity than HSK-A63 while offering more rigidity than HSK-E25
  • Compact footprint allows placement in precision finishing areas alongside other machines

Limitations

  • 450 x 350 x 300 mm travel limits workpiece size to small-to-medium components
  • 15 kW spindle power restricts material removal rates—semi-finishing and finishing only for hard materials
  • 120-degree B-axis range is more limited than 150-degree A-axis configurations on some competitors
  • 30-tool magazine may need manual tool management for complex parts with extensive tooling needs
  • HSK-E40 tooling is less common than HSK-A63, with narrower vendor availability

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Makino V33i-5XB cost?

A new Makino V33i-5XB typically runs between $280,000 and $420,000 depending on configuration. The base machine with 30K RPM spindle and 30-tool magazine starts around $280,000. Adding precision probing, through-spindle coolant, enhanced thermal packages, and pallet automation pushes toward $370,000-$420,000. Used V33i-5XB machines can be found for $160,000-$260,000 depending on vintage and condition.

02 How does the V33i-5XB compare to the standard V33i?

The V33i-5XB adds the B/C trunnion rotary table to the standard V33i platform, enabling 5-axis machining. The standard V33i is a 3-axis vertical machining center with the same spindle, travels, and control. The 5XB variant adds approximately $80,000-$120,000 to the price for the rotary table package. Choose the 5XB when your parts require multi-face access or continuous 5-axis contouring that 3-axis cannot achieve.

03 Why HSK-E40 instead of HSK-A63?

The HSK-E40 taper is optimized for high-speed spindles above 20,000 RPM. Its symmetrical design provides better balance and concentricity at high speeds compared to the asymmetrical HSK-A63. At 30,000 RPM, tool balance is critical—even small imbalances in HSK-A63 holders can cause vibration that degrades surface finish. The E40 interface also weighs less, reducing the spindle's rotating mass for better acceleration.

04 What surface finishes can the V33i-5XB achieve?

The V33i-5XB achieves surface finishes of Ra 0.1-0.2 µm on hardened mold steels with optimized ball nose tooling at 30,000 RPM. On non-ferrous materials, finishes below Ra 0.05 µm are possible. The high spindle speed enables very fine step-overs at productive feed rates, while the trunnion table maintains consistent tool engagement for uniform surface quality across contoured geometry.

05 Is the V33i-5XB suitable for graphite machining?

Yes, the V33i-5XB handles graphite electrode finishing effectively. The 30,000 RPM spindle is well-suited to graphite's preferred cutting parameters, and the compact enclosure helps contain dust. Makino offers sealing and extraction packages for graphite applications. Many die/mold shops use the V33i-5XB for both graphite electrode finishing and hardened steel cavity finishing.
