Jet Edge X-5 Series

The Jet Edge X-5 Series is a 5-axis CNC abrasive waterjet cutting system engineered for manufacturers and job shops that require advanced contour cutting, bevel trimming, and aerospace-grade part geometry that cannot be achieved with conventional 3-axis waterjet machines. Built in St. Michael, Minnesota, the X-5 platform reflects Jet Edge's deep roots in high-pressure waterjet technology developed since 1984, combining American-made reliability with the precision demanded by aerospace, defense, and medical device production environments.

The 5-axis cutting head on the X-5 Series rotates and tilts across a full ±60-degree range, allowing the abrasive jet to approach material at compound angles without repositioning the workpiece. This capability is essential for cutting tapered slots, weld prep bevels, countersinks, and complex 3D surface contours in titanium, Inconel, carbon fiber composites, armor plate, and thick aluminum billets. The tilt axis eliminates the natural taper inherent in 3-axis waterjet cutting — typically 0.5 to 2 degrees on thick materials — producing near-net-shape parts that require minimal post-process finishing.

The machine is constructed on a heavy-duty welded steel bridge gantry with precision-ground linear rails and dual-drive servo motors on the X-axis for synchronized motion across large table formats. Positioning accuracy reaches ±0.025 mm across the full cutting envelope, with repeatability of ±0.013 mm. Rapid traverse speeds up to 15,000 mm/min minimize non-cutting time during complex multi-contour programs. The X-5 is offered in multiple table sizes, with cutting areas from approximately 1,500 x 3,000 mm to 3,000 x 6,000 mm to accommodate a range of production volumes and material formats.

Jet Edge configures the X-5 with their 60,000 psi (4,137 bar) intensifier pump, available in power ratings from 50 hp to 150 hp. The intensifier design produces consistent, pulse-free high-pressure output that is particularly important for smooth surface finishes on precision aerospace components. The hydraulic intensifier circuit is oil-cooled and includes automatic seal-wear compensation, extending pump consumable life in continuous production environments. Jet Edge intensifier pumps are manufactured in-house in Minnesota, allowing close control of quality and rapid availability of spare components.

Control is provided via a PC-based CNC with Jet Edge's intuitive operator interface, compatible with standard G-code and industry-leading waterjet CAM packages including IGEMS and Sigmanest. The X-5 includes integrated abrasive feed monitoring, cutting head collision detection, and a fault diagnostics module that logs machine events for predictive maintenance analysis.
