Overview
The Hermle C 32 U MT is the mill-turn variant of Hermle's versatile C 32 U 5-axis machining center, adding integrated turning capability for shops that need both complex 5-axis milling and turning features completed in one clamping. The C 32 U is one of Hermle's most popular platforms, and the MT version extends its capability to handle parts like flanged fittings, valve bodies, and small turbine components that would otherwise require a separate lathe operation.
X/Y/Z travels are 650 x 600 x 500 mm with a 650 mm diameter trunnion table rated for 500 kg. The C-axis uses a direct-drive torque motor capable of turning at up to 800 rpm. The standard milling spindle runs at 15,000 rpm HSK-A63 with 20 kW, upgradeable to 18,000 rpm or high-speed options up to 42,000 rpm. The 36-tool magazine expands to 87 positions. Rapid traverse is 35 m/min on all linear axes.
The mineral-cast base weighs approximately 10,000 kg total — enough mass to handle combined milling and turning forces without vibration issues. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.005 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm. Control options include Heidenhain TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl with full mill-turn cycle support. New pricing runs $550,000-$800,000. The C 32 U MT is the entry point to Hermle's mill-turn lineup, offering the process consolidation benefits of mill-turn without jumping to the larger C 42 U MT platform.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Entry point to Hermle mill-turn at roughly $550,000 — most affordable MT option in the lineup
- 800 rpm C-axis turning via direct-drive torque motor handles most medium-duty turning operations
- Same proven modified gantry architecture as the standard C 32 U
- 500 kg table capacity covers a wide range of part sizes in steel and titanium
- Mineral-cast base provides excellent vibration damping for combined mill-turn forces
- Choice of Heidenhain or Siemens controls with integrated mill-turn programming
Limitations
- 35 m/min rapids are slower than the larger MT models (C 42, C 52, C 62) which reach 60 m/min
- 87-tool maximum magazine is smaller than larger MT models offering up to 325 tools
- 800 rpm turning speed limits productivity on dedicated turning operations
- Premium pricing compared to competitors like DMG Mori DMU 65 monoBLOCK with millTURN
- Hermle service presence in North America is more limited than domestic and Japanese brands

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines run $550,000-$800,000 depending on spindle, tool capacity, and options. Used machines from 2017-2022 trade in the $325,000-$500,000 range.
02
The MT version adds 800 rpm turning capability via a direct-drive torque motor on the C-axis table. Milling specifications remain the same. The MT version costs approximately $100,000-$150,000 more than the standard C 32 U.
03
OD turning, ID boring, facing, grooving, and threading. The 800 rpm table speed and direct-drive motor handle most medium-duty turning operations on parts up to 500 kg.
04
Yes, the HS-flex pallet handling system integrates with the C 32 U MT for automated pallet loading and unloading during unmanned shifts.
