Overview
The Haas VM-12/50 combines 150 in (3,810 mm) of X travel with a 50-taper geared spindle rated 60 hp (44.7 kW). Travels are 150 × 32 × 30 in (3,810 × 813 × 762 mm) on a 150 × 28 in (3,810 × 711 mm) table, and Haas lists a starting price of US$463,995.
Three neighbours frame the choice. The VM-12 is the same size with a 30 hp (22.4 kW), 12,000 rpm 40-taper spindle. The VM-10/50 has the same spindle rating on 120 in (3,048 mm) of X. The VM-14/50 keeps the 150 in X travel and widens Y to 40 in (1,016 mm) against 32 in (813 mm) here. That leaves this model for parts that are long, demanding to cut, and no wider than the table.
The spindle produces 350 ft-lbf (475 N·m) at 900 rpm through a 2-speed gearbox and runs up to 10,000 rpm. Along 150 in of travel that torque is useful for slotting and drilling long steel sections, or for facing a long weldment in one clamping instead of moving it under a shorter machine. X and Y thrust are 4,100 lbf (18,238 N) and Z thrust is 5,600 lbf (24,910 N). The 30+1 changer takes tools up to 4 in (102 mm) in diameter when full and up to 30 lb (13.6 kg).
The limits are worth reading before the travels. Table load is 4,000 lb (1,814 kg), and a steel part that fills a table of this length gets there fast. X feed and X rapid both stop at 360 ipm (9.1 m/min). Tool changes take 4.2 s tool-to-tool and 6.3 s chip-to-chip. The supply is 105 A at 220 VAC or 53 A at 440 VAC three-phase. Haas's table for this model has no shipping weight or crate sizes, so ask for them before planning delivery; the VM-12 is listed at 36,300 lb (16,466 kg).
