Haas VM-10/50

The Haas VM-10/50 is a 50-taper long-bed mold machine: a 60 hp (44.7 kW) spindle with a 2-speed gearbox over a 120 × 28 in (3,048 × 711 mm) table, with travels of 120 × 32 × 30 in (3,048 × 813 × 762 mm). It is the geared counterpart of the VM-10 and shares that machine's table, travels and feed rates.

What changes is the cut it can take. Peak torque is 350 ft-lbf (475 N·m) at 900 rpm, against 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm on the VM-10, and the magazine carries tools up to 4 in (102 mm) across with every pocket full and up to 30 lb (13.6 kg). On a table this long that matters for jobs like squaring long steel bars, facing die plates or drilling deep holes along a rail, where a lighter spindle would need many shallow passes.

Axis motion is unchanged from the lighter machine, and for heavy work that is less of a penalty. The 360 ipm (9.1 m/min) limit on X applies to both cutting feed and rapids; Y and Z rapid at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). Heavy roughing in steel is normally fed far below those limits, so the slow X axis mainly shows when the spindle has to return from the far end of the table. Thrust is 3,400 lbf (15,124 N) on X and Y and 5,600 lbf (24,910 N) on Z, about 65% more, which favours drilling and plunge roughing.

Plan for two things. Tool changes are slow at 4.2 s tool-to-tool and 6.3 s chip-to-chip, and the electrical supply is 105 A at 220 VAC or 53 A at 440 VAC three-phase. Table load remains 4,000 lb (1,814 kg). Haas lists the shipped weight at 30,100 lb (13,654 kg), the same figure it gives for the VM-10, and a starting price of US$392,995.
