Overview
The Haas VM-10 is the smallest of Haas's long-bed mold machines: 120 in (3,048 mm) of X travel on a 120 × 28 in (3,048 × 711 mm) table, with 32 in (813 mm) of Y and 30 in (762 mm) of Z. The spindle is a 40-taper inline direct-drive unit, 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 12,000 rpm. Haas lists a starting price of US$349,995.
Its proportions decide what it is good at. The table is more than four times as long as it is wide, and the 32 in of Y covers the 28 in width with only a small margin. That suits long, slender work such as rails, die plates and long mold inserts, or a line of vises set end to end. Haas lists 5 T-slots running in X and 24 in Y, on 4.92 in (125 mm) centres, so there is a cross slot at regular intervals along the whole length for locating fixtures.
The long axis is also the slow one. X rapids are 360 ipm (9.1 m/min), the same as the maximum cutting feedrate, while Y and Z rapid at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). Programs that hop between the two ends of the table spend real time in transit, so grouping operations by position pays off. Tool changes are 2.8 s tool-to-tool and 3.6 s chip-to-chip from a 30+1 side-mount changer.
Torque peaks at 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, and table load is 4,000 lb (1,814 kg), a figure that does not grow with table length. Buyers who need more width should compare the VM-11, which keeps the same table and X travel with 40 in (1,016 mm) of Y; those who need more length, the VM-12 with 150 in (3,810 mm) of X. The VM-10/50 is this machine with a 60 hp (44.7 kW) 50-taper spindle. The VM-10 ships at 30,100 lb (13,654 kg).

On a 120 in (3,048 mm) axis that makes travel between the ends of the table the slowest part of a program, so it helps to finish every operation at one station before moving to the next.

30+1 tools in a side-mount changer. Each can be up to 16 in (406 mm) long and 12 lb (5.4 kg), and 2.5 in (64 mm) in diameter with all pockets occupied or 5 in (127 mm) with adjacent pockets empty. Haas's shipping table also has rows for a 50+1 side-mount changer, which is an optional configuration.

Power is 220 VAC three-phase at 70 A or 440 VAC three-phase at 35 A. Compressed air is 4 scfm at 100 psi (113 L/min at 6.9 bar), never below 80 psi (5.5 bar). For rigging, Haas lists a shipping weight of 30,100 lb (13,654 kg) and a domestic pallet of 288 × 102 × 128.5 in (732 × 260 × 326 cm); those are shipping figures, not floor space.
