Overview

The Haas ST-45 is the large-bore variant of the Haas large-frame turning center family. Built on the same castings as the ST-40, the ST-45 swaps in a massive 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore with an A2-11 spindle nose and an 18-inch hydraulic chuck, purpose-built for tubular work, pipe fittings, flanges, and large-bore components that smaller through-bore lathes simply cannot handle. The max cutting envelope remains 762 mm (30 in) diameter by 1,118 mm (44 in) length.

The 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle drives through a 2-speed gearbox, producing 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) of torque at 150 RPM. Max spindle speed is 1,400 RPM, lower than the ST-40's 2,400 RPM due to the larger-diameter spindle assembly and heavier chuck. An optional XP high-performance spindle bumps output to 41.0 kW (55 hp) and 2,847 Nm (2,100 ft-lb) for heavy roughing. Axis travels are 508 mm (20 in) in X and 1,118 mm (44 in) in Z, with rapids at 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) on both axes.

Starting at approximately $187,995, the ST-45 fills a critical niche for shops that need large through-bore capacity without stepping up to the even larger ST-55 platform. The 12-station BOT turret is standard, with optional BMT75 live tooling and C-axis available. For shops in oil and gas, pipeline, valve manufacturing, and heavy industrial sectors where tube and pipe work dominates, the ST-45's 7-inch bore makes it the workhorse. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 7.0-inch spindle bore and A2-11 spindle nose handle large-bore tubular work, pipe, and hollow components that the ST-40's 4.62-inch bore cannot accept
  • Same proven castings and footprint as the ST-40, so shops familiar with the platform get large-bore capability without learning a new machine
  • 40 hp spindle with 1,400 ft-lb of torque through a 2-speed gearbox provides ample power for heavy material removal on large-diameter workpieces
  • Optional XP spindle upgrade to 55 hp and 2,100 ft-lb of torque for demanding oil and gas, pipeline, and valve manufacturing applications
  • At ~$188K starting, offers large-bore capacity at a fraction of the cost of purpose-built oil-country lathes from Takisawa, Hwacheon, and others

Limitations

  • 1,400 RPM max spindle speed is significantly lower than the ST-40's 2,400 RPM, limiting surface speed on smaller-diameter work and aluminum finishing
  • 18-inch chuck and large spindle assembly add rotational inertia, resulting in longer acceleration and deceleration times between operations
  • Machine weight exceeding 10,000 kg requires heavy-duty rigging and floor preparation, adding to installation cost
  • The 7.0-inch bore specification is with optional workholding; standard bar capacity is 6.5 inches with optional setup

Best For

Oil and gas manufacturers turning pipe, couplings, flanges, and tubular components that require large through-bore capacity Valve and fitting manufacturers machining large-bore housings, bodies, and bonnets up to 762 mm (30 in) diameter Heavy industrial shops turning hollow shafts, sleeves, and cylindrical components that must pass through the spindle bore Shops already running Haas ST-40 machines that need to expand into large-bore work without changing control platforms or programming workflows

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-45 cost?

The Haas ST-45 starts at approximately $187,995 for the base configuration. Adding the XP spindle, BMT75 live tooling turret, tailstock, chip conveyor, and high-pressure coolant can push the configured price to $240,000-$270,000. The ST-45 commands a $12,000 premium over the ST-40 for the larger-bore spindle assembly and chuck.

02 What is the difference between the ST-45 and ST-40?

The key difference is bore size: the ST-45 has a 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore with an A2-11 nose, while the ST-40 has a 117.3 mm (4.62 in) bore with an A2-8 nose. The ST-45 runs a lower max speed of 1,400 RPM versus 2,400 RPM on the ST-40. Cutting envelope and axis travels are identical. Choose the ST-45 for large-bore tubular work; choose the ST-40 for general large-frame turning with higher RPM.

03 Is there a long-bed version of the ST-45?

Yes, the Haas ST-45L extends the Z-axis travel to 2,032 mm (80 in) for long-shaft and pipe work. It shares the same 7.0-inch bore, A2-11 spindle, and 40 hp motor. The ST-45L starts at approximately $257,995 and is ideal for pipe threading, long couplings, and extended-length hollow components.

04 Can the ST-45 run with live tooling?

Yes, with the optional BMT75 turret and C-axis. The BMT75 turret supports 4,000 RPM live tooling with either 12 or 24 stations, enabling cross-drilling, milling, and tapping without a second setup. This is particularly valuable for valve bodies, pipe fittings, and flanges that require cross-holes and bolt patterns.
