Overview

The Haas ST-30 is the entry point into the Haas large-frame turning center lineup. With an 806 mm (31.75 in) swing, 381 mm (15 in) max cutting diameter, 826 mm (32.5 in) max cutting length, and 76 mm (3 in) bar capacity, it handles substantially larger parts than the mid-size ST-20 and ST-25 platforms.

The A2-6 spindle delivers 22.4 kW (30 hp) and 407 Nm (300 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, topping out at 3,400 RPM. An optional gearbox pushes torque to 1,356 Nm (1,000 ft-lb) at 150 RPM for heavy interrupted cuts on large-diameter workpieces. That gearbox option is the ST-30's secret weapon — shops turning large flanges, gears, and thick-wall tubes can hold aggressive feeds without stalling the spindle.

Axis travels are 318 mm (12.5 in) in X and 660 mm (26 in) in Z, with rapids at 24 m/min (945 ipm). The 254 mm (10 in) chuck on an A2-6 nose provides solid workholding. Maximum thrust forces are 18,238 N (4,100 lbf) in X and 22,686 N (5,100 lbf) in Z. The 12-station bolt-on turret handles any combination of OD and ID tools. Between centers measures 762 mm (30 in) for shaft work with tailstock support.

Haas redesigned the ST-30 platform with a steeper 55-degree wedge angle for improved chip evacuation, heavier castings, and better thermal stability. The 208 L (55 gal) coolant tank and NGC control are standard.

At roughly $75,000-$110,000 configured, the ST-30 is the most affordable large-frame CNC turning center from a major manufacturer. It competes with the Doosan Puma 3100 and Okuma LB4000 EX II at a $20-40K price advantage. The ST-30 is also the platform for the ST-30Y with Y-axis and live tooling, so shops that start with the base ST-30 can upgrade later on a familiar platform. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Optional gearbox delivers 1,000 ft-lb of torque at 150 RPM for heavy interrupted cuts on large-diameter work that would stall smaller machines
  • 31.75-inch swing and 15 x 32.5-inch cutting envelope handle parts the mid-size ST-20/25 platform cannot reach
  • At $75-110K configured, it is the most affordable large-frame CNC turning center from a major manufacturer
  • 30-inch between centers with tailstock support handles long shaft work with proper support
  • Redesigned 55-degree wedge angle improves chip flow and evacuation compared to the prior generation
  • Same platform as the ST-30Y, enabling a future upgrade path to Y-axis and live tooling on familiar castings

Limitations

  • 30 hp spindle can feel underpowered for the large work envelope compared to the ST-35's 40 hp on aggressive roughing
  • 3-inch bar capacity is the same as the smaller ST-25, limiting bore work despite the larger frame
  • 3,400 RPM spindle speed restricts surface speeds on small-diameter aluminum finishing in the large work envelope
  • No Y-axis or live tooling on the base ST-30 means off-center features require the ST-30Y at additional cost
  • Large frame and heavy casting require proper floor preparation and rigging for installation

Best For

Large-diameter chuck work on flanges, housings, and discs up to 381 mm (15 in) diameter Long shaft turning with tailstock support up to 762 mm (30 in) between centers Production bar work in 3-inch stock on a large-frame platform with room for growth Oil and gas, hydraulic, and heavy equipment component manufacturing Shops stepping up from mid-size lathes to a large-frame platform without a six-figure commitment Contract manufacturers needing a versatile large-envelope turning center for mixed part families

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-30 cost?

Base price starts around $75,000. Adding the gearbox, tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and bar feeder pushes the configured price to $95,000-$110,000. The gearbox option adds roughly $5,000 and is worth it for shops doing heavy interrupted cuts. Used ST-30 machines from 2016-2022 sell in the $40,000-$70,000 range.

02 Should I get the gearbox option?

If you turn large-diameter parts, do heavy interrupted cuts, or work with tough materials at low RPM, the gearbox provides 1,000 ft-lb of torque at 150 RPM. That is more than triple the standard torque. For about $5,000, it is one of the best-value options on any Haas lathe. Skip it only if your work is exclusively small-diameter bar at higher speeds.

03 How does the ST-30 compare to the ST-35?

The ST-35 shares the same frame and work envelope but steps up to a 40 hp spindle, A2-8 spindle nose, 4-inch bar capacity, 12-inch chuck, and 4.62-inch bore. Choose the ST-30 when 3-inch bar and 30 hp are sufficient. Choose the ST-35 when you need the larger bore, more power, and bigger workholding.

04 What is the ST-30's maximum weight capacity?

The chuck work capacity depends on the chuck and jaws. The 10-inch chuck handles most work within the 15-inch max cutting diameter. For tailstock-supported shaft work, the between-centers distance of 30 inches accommodates long parts. Consult your HFO for specific weight limits based on your workholding setup.
