Overview

The GF Machining Solutions CHARMILLES LASER P 400 U is the fully configured 5-axis variant of the LASER P 400 platform, integrating A-axis and B-axis rotary capability as standard equipment rather than as an option. This makes the LASER P 400 U the go-to configuration for shops that routinely texture complex curved surfaces on mold inserts, medical device components, and precision tooling.

Built on the same compact 1,227 x 1,659 mm footprint as the base LASER P 400, the U variant includes the integrated A-axis (115° to -105°) and continuous 360° B-axis, enabling the laser beam to maintain perpendicular incidence on freeform surfaces. This is critical for consistent texture depth on curved mold cavities, where off-angle laser processing would otherwise produce uneven textures.

The multi-source laser architecture carries over from the base model, supporting nanosecond, femtosecond, or combined laser configurations. Spot sizes from 15 to 50 µm allow the machine to handle everything from coarse leather-grain textures to ultra-fine micro-features on medical implant molds. In 5-axis mode, the workpiece envelope is Ø 120 x 120 mm at up to 4 kg — optimized for the small, complex inserts that benefit most from multi-axis laser processing.

The LASER P 400 U occupies a strategic position in GF's laser texturing lineup between the entry-level P 400 and the large-format P 1200 U. For mold shops that primarily work with inserts and cores under Ø 120 mm, the 400 U delivers full 5-axis laser texturing capability without the floor space, foundation, or capital expenditure of the 1200 U platform.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Integrated 5-axis (A + B) rotary enables consistent texturing on complex freeform surfaces
  • Multi-source laser flexibility supports nanosecond, femtosecond, or combined configurations
  • Compact 2.04 m² footprint delivers 5-axis capability without large-machine floor space demands
  • Spot sizes down to 15 µm for ultra-fine micro-features on medical and optical mold tooling
  • Same platform as LASER P 400 — operators transition seamlessly between 3-axis and 5-axis models
  • Eliminates chemical etching for curved mold surfaces where masking is most difficult

Limitations

  • 5-axis workpiece envelope limited to Ø 120 x 120 mm — only small inserts and cores
  • 4 kg 5-axis weight limit excludes medium-size mold components
  • Higher price premium over base LASER P 400 for integrated rotary axes
  • 600 x 400 mm linear travel insufficient for large mold halves even in 3-axis mode

Best For

Mold shops texturing curved inserts and cores requiring 5-axis laser access Medical device tooling with complex freeform surfaces needing uniform textures Precision micro-texturing on optical and cosmetic mold components Facilities needing compact 5-axis laser texturing without large-machine investment Shops processing small batches of high-value mold inserts with complex geometries

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the LASER P 400 and the LASER P 400 U?

The LASER P 400 U includes integrated 5-axis (A + B) rotary capability as standard, while the base LASER P 400 offers this as an option. Both share the same linear travels, laser sources, and footprint. The U designation signifies the built-in universal rotary package.

02 Why is the 5-axis workpiece capacity so much smaller than the 3-axis capacity?

The 5-axis rotary axes physically constrain the available machining envelope. The Ø 120 x 120 mm 5-axis volume represents the swept envelope where the part can rotate through all required angles without collision. Larger parts can still be textured in 3-axis mode up to the full 600 x 400 x 300 mm envelope.

03 Can I upgrade a base LASER P 400 to the U configuration later?

GF Machining Solutions offers rotary axis packages as retrofit options for the LASER P 400. However, ordering the U model from the factory ensures optimal integration and calibration. Consult your GF representative for specific upgrade paths and pricing.

04 What industries benefit most from 5-axis laser texturing?

Automotive interior molds (steering wheels, dashboards), medical device tooling (implant surfaces, surgical instruments), consumer electronics (phone cases, wearables), and cosmetics packaging molds all benefit from 5-axis laser texturing where curved surfaces require uniform texture application.
