Overview
The DMG Mori NLX 2500 2nd Generation is the updated version of one of the most widely installed universal turning centers in production shops worldwide. Building on the proven NLX platform, the 2nd Generation brings refined thermal compensation, an upgraded BMT turret, and improved ergonomics while keeping the core strengths that made the original NLX 2500 a benchmark for mid-range CNC lathes. It handles bar stock up to 105 mm (4.1 in) diameter and turns workpieces up to 366 mm (14.4 in) in diameter.
The main spindle is available in two configurations: a 10-inch chuck version spinning at 5,000 RPM with 843 Nm of torque for high-speed aluminum and mild steel work, and a 12-inch chuck variant at 3,000 RPM delivering 1,273 Nm for heavy roughing on large-diameter forgings and castings. Both configurations use a flat-bed design with integrated coolant circulation through the machine bed for thermal stability across long production runs.
Milling capability comes from the BMT (Built-in Motor Turret), which places the motor directly inside the turret body for significantly better rigidity than conventional VDI bolt-on driven tooling. The BMT turret delivers up to 12,000 RPM with 100 Nm of torque in the high-speed configuration, or 6,000 RPM with 100 Nm in the high-torque variant. With up to 20 tool stations on the BMT versus 12 on the VDI turret, shops can load more tools for complex parts and reduce changeover time. The optional 120 mm Y-axis enables off-center milling, drilling, and tapping operations.
The NLX 2500 2nd Generation is available in two bed lengths: Type 700 with 708 mm (27.9 in) maximum workpiece length and Type 1250 with 1,258 mm (49.5 in) maximum workpiece length. An optional right-side sub-spindle enables done-in-one machining with configurations from 6-inch to 10-inch chucks spinning up to 7,000 RPM. The machine runs CELOS with either Siemens or Mitsubishi MAPPS control, and pricing typically starts around $165,000 for a base configuration, reaching $250,000+ fully loaded.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- BMT turret with 12,000 RPM driven tools provides milling rigidity that bolt-on VDI tooling cannot match
- 105 mm bar capacity handles larger bar stock than most competing 10-inch chuck lathes
- Two spindle options let buyers optimize for speed (5,000 RPM) or torque (3,000 RPM / 1,273 Nm)
- Coolant circulation through the machine bed provides thermal stability across production shifts
- Box guideways on all axes deliver vibration damping superior to linear guide competitors
- Sub-spindle option with up to 7,000 RPM enables done-in-one machining of both ends
Limitations
- Starting at $165K and reaching $250K+ fully loaded, costs more than comparable Mazak QT-250MSY or Haas ST-20Y
- CELOS interface has a steeper learning curve than Mazak MAZATROL or Haas conversational control
- DMG Mori parts and service costs are among the highest in the industry
- Box guideways result in slower rapid traverse vs linear-guide competitors
