Overview
The DMG Mori DMC 85 h FD monoBLOCK is the larger sibling in the horizontal 5-axis monoBLOCK mill-turn family, offering significantly more travel and workpiece capacity than the 65-class machine while maintaining the same monolithic one-piece cast iron construction and thermosymmetric design principles. The h monoBLOCK horizontal platform combines 5-axis simultaneous machining with FD (FreeDrive) turning capability, enabling complete machining of complex parts with both milled and turned features in a single setup.
Travel measures 850 x 1,150 x 900 mm (33.5 x 45.3 x 35.4 in), providing a substantially larger work envelope than the DMC 65 h variant. Maximum workpiece capacity reaches 830 mm (32.7 in) diameter and 900 mm (35.4 in) height at up to 800 kg (1,764 lb) table load. The swivelling rotary table with bilateral bearings supports components up to 1,000 kg for simultaneous 5-axis contouring.
The FD turning function delivers rotational speeds up to 800 RPM for facing, boring, and grooving operations. While the turning speed is lower than the 65-class due to the larger table diameter and workpiece mass, it remains practical for most supplementary turning operations on combined-feature parts. The horizontal spindle orientation ensures chips fall away from the workpiece under gravity during both milling and turning.
Spindle options include HSK-A63 standard and HSK-A100 for heavy cutting, supporting tools up to 280 mm (11 in) diameter and 29.5 kg (65.1 lb). The thermosymmetric design achieves long-term accuracy of 5 µm (0.0002 in). The DMC designation provides pallet-changer capability, and tool magazines expand to 120 positions. Floor space is approximately 17.5 m² (188 sq ft). Control options include SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7 with CELOS X. New machines price between $500,000 and $700,000. Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 850 x 1,150 x 900 mm travel envelope handles significantly larger workpieces than the 65-class horizontal monoBLOCK
- 800 kg table load accommodates heavy castings, forgings, and complex fixtures for aerospace and industrial components
- Horizontal spindle with FD mill-turn eliminates separate lathe operations while providing gravity-assisted chip evacuation
- HSK-A100 option with up to 430 Nm torque enables aggressive roughing in steel, cast iron, and titanium
- Thermosymmetric design achieves 5 µm long-term accuracy for precision combined-operation parts
- DMC pallet-changer capability supports load-while-cutting production for high spindle utilization
Limitations
- 800 RPM max FD turning speed is lower than the 65-class (1,200 RPM) due to larger table mass
- Starting at $500K, the investment requires substantial combined-operation workload to justify over separate machines
- 17.5 m² footprint is significantly larger than the 65-class, requiring more floor space
- Niche horizontal 5-axis mill-turn market limits resale options and secondhand availability

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines price $500,000-$700,000 depending on spindle selection, tool magazine size, and control choice. The HSK-A100 heavy-cutting spindle and expanded tool magazine add to the base cost.
02
The 85 adds 200 mm more X-travel, 200 mm more Y, 200 mm more Z, and 200 kg more table load. Choose the 85 when your parts exceed 630 mm diameter, 700 mm height, or 600 kg weight. The 65 is sufficient for medium-sized components and costs $100K-$125K less.
03
The larger table diameter and higher workpiece mass (800 vs 600 kg) require lower rotational speeds for safe operation and to maintain accuracy. At 800 RPM, the FD function still handles facing, boring, and grooving on most combined-feature parts.
04
SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7, both running under the CELOS X interface with unified mill-turn programming. Both controls handle seamless transitions between milling and turning operations.
