Overview
The DMG Mori DMC 270 u FD is one of the largest portal 5-axis mill-turn machines in the DMG Mori lineup, delivering a massive 2,700 x 2,700 x 1,600 mm (106.3 x 106.3 x 63 in) work envelope for workpieces up to 3,400 mm (133.9 in) diameter, 1,620 mm (63.8 in) height, and 9,000 kg (19,842 lb) in milling mode or 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) in FD mill-turn configuration. This platform handles the largest aerospace structural components, power generation turbine casings, and heavy industrial parts that exceed the DMC 210's capacity.
The portal gantry construction provides thermally symmetric rigidity across the enormous work envelope. The powerMASTER motor spindle delivers 1,000 Nm (738 ft-lb) through HSK-A100, while the torqueMASTER gear spindle option pushes to 1,800 Nm (1,328 ft-lb) for maximum roughing in titanium, Inconel, and hardened steel. The DirectDrive table delivers up to 11,000 Nm (8,113 ft-lb) of table torque for heavy turning operations on the largest workpieces.
Feed speed reaches 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) across all axes, keeping non-cutting time manageable despite the enormous travel distances. The tool magazine holds up to 243 tools in the wheel configuration. Milling, turning, and grinding technology integration run in one setup through SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7 controls with CELOS X.
A pallet changer comes standard for parallel setup on workpieces weighing several tons. The DMC 270 u FD is positioned for shops machining the largest practical workpieces in a single-spindle rotary-table format. Beyond this size, only the DMC 340 u FD and dedicated gantry machines offer more capacity.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2,700 x 2,700 x 1,600 mm travel handles workpieces up to 3,400 mm diameter and 9,000 kg that no duoBLOCK or smaller portal can accommodate
- 11,000 Nm DirectDrive table torque enables heavy turning on the largest workpieces without a dedicated vertical turning lathe
- Portal construction maintains symmetric rigidity and thermal stability across the enormous work envelope
- FD mill-turn at 6,000 kg capacity eliminates extremely costly multi-machine transfers for large combined-operation parts
- TorqueMASTER at 1,800 Nm delivers maximum roughing performance in superalloys on massive components
- Standard pallet changer enables parallel setup for multi-ton workpieces
Limitations
- Price above $3M is among the highest for rotary-table 5-axis machines, requiring specialized large-part production to justify
- Installation requires a purpose-built foundation pit and significant rigging -- total installed cost adds $200,000-$500,000+
- 243-tool magazine is smaller than the duoBLOCK's 453-tool capacity, potentially requiring manual tool loading for complex parts
- Few shops have the workpiece volume and part size to utilize this machine class consistently
- Extended lead times for ordering, installation, and critical spare parts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines typically price between $3,000,000 and $4,500,000 depending on spindle, automation, and accuracy packages. Installation including foundation work adds $200,000-$500,000+. This is specialist capital equipment for high-value large-part production.
02
Step up to the DMC 270 when parts exceed 2,500 mm diameter, need more than 6,000 kg milling capacity, or require the 2,700 mm travel cube. The 270 also provides significantly higher table torque (11,000 Nm vs the 210's lower torque) for heavy turning on large diameters.
03
For parts requiring both 5-axis milling and turning, yes. The table torque handles heavy facing, OD turning, and boring on workpieces up to 6,000 kg in FD mode. For pure turning production at maximum throughput, a dedicated VTL remains more efficient.
04
Lead times typically range from 12 to 18 months from order to installation. Foundation preparation should begin 3-6 months before machine arrival. DMG Mori coordinates installation planning to minimize total project duration.
